Merkur 37C Slant Coming. What Do I need to Know?

I just had to have one of these.

I have never shaved with a slant before, but really like my Gillette Old Type Open Comb.

Any advice before I begin this new adventure?

A light touch is recommended until you get the 'feel' for the razor. You'll get a truly fine, close shave with 37c. I don't alter my technique at all when I use my slants vs 'non-slants'—unlike when I use my 2011 R41 which necessitates a slightly shallower angle.

Just take it a little slower than usual but the process is pretty much exactly the same. You'll be amazed by the shave...it even sounds different as it glides across your face, you might think it's not doing anything at all but suddenly all your stubble is gone! Enjoy it, it's one of my personal favorites.

Treat it with respect like you do with your other razors and the 37C will reward you with an excellent shave. Keep us posted with pics of course.

WARHAWK

I found shaving with my 37C to be easier than my R89. That might seem strange since the R89 is supposed to be a beginner's razor. However, the feedback of the 37C is way better and it is more um.. efficient (other people would say 'aggressive').

Just be careful loading a blade... visually make sure (as much as possible) that the amount of blade is even on both sides and that the edge lines up with the comb on each side. I have read a few times on here that "the blade is exposed more at one end than the other!" this is incorrect and if it does then it is loaded wrong. In my experience you cannot just drop a blade in and get on with it... a little care is needed as you are tightening the knob. I can usually tell if I have misaligned the blade as one side will be noticably rougher than the other as I scrape my face.. both sides silky smooth.... job done right.

Does the alignment problem relate to the make of blade in any way? I just got a 37C last week, have used it twice, but had the blade in and out several times. Not having any alignment issues at all. Only used the supplied Merkur blade so far. Should I stick to the Merkur blades?

Thanks.

I agree with derjoachim. I find the 37C much easier to shave with than my EJ 89DEBL. For me, the 37C is more efficient with my trouble areas as well, my chin and the sides of my neck. It's one of the best razors I own.

I don't know.. I have only ever used Feathers.. I just find that to get the blade symetrical it needs tweeking ever so slightly.. if I dont do that one side tugs..

I think it is a fairly mild razor that delivers the results of a highly aggressive one due to the slicing action. The angle is a bit different than most de, imo. For me, the handle has to be slightly closer to parallel to the face than most others.
