What's new

merkur 34C too heavy and aggressive

I've used a merkur HD for about a year now, and I found I have two issues with it.

1) Heavy
I used a light grip on the bottom og the handle to avoid using any pressure, but the thing makes my fingers feel tired.

2) aggressiveness.
I used to do a 1 pass shave, but i wanna start doing 2 to 3 passes.
Every time I tried this with the HD I always got a nick or a cut.

Could you guys recommend me a lighter and milder razor?
My idea was the 33C but i wanted to double check with the experts :)

You should try a Tech or a Super Speed - both those would be less weighty and aggressive than the Merkur. I love my Tech: it feels light enough to manipulate but I still know it's there.

actually I tried a Tech and found it ok.
the only problem i found with it was the handle being too wimpy.

I haven't tried a superspeed yet, but I have a weishi I bought but haven't touched.

Problem with the weishi is people keep giving it a bad rep, so i was afraid to try it and them have to sell them as used if I don't like it.

In my opinion, the weishi should be the same shave as a superspeed, and the bad comments come from it being chinese and people who haven't tried it. but i'm not sure :-/

+1 on the Super Speed. It is generally mild, but you can dial it up or down depending on the blade you pick. I find them a bit too mild for me, until I drop a Feather in one, at which point it becomes ideal.

I would agree that vintage Gillettes (SS, Slim, or Fatboy) would be a good way to go. If you want to go with something new, I recommend the EJ DE89L. The HD did not work for me, but I found that I was getting great shaves as soon as I moved to the EJ.

If you've already tried the Tech, then I'll second the Slim / FatBoy idea.

I've been revisiting the FatBoy here lately a find it just plan fun to shave with.

Good luck on the journey.

What I would really recommend you is a Muhle or EJ razor.
I have a Muhle R89 and it is way better than the HD. I started with the HD, but it is like you said too aggressive(got a horror shave with a Astra blade) and too heavy. The Muhle is much more ok for me. And I found a blade that is perfect for it. The super iridium! Grab a pack if you can. You won't regret it!! I admit I used Gillette Yellow in the R89 and it wasn't great. But the SI is just fantastic!

the r89 looks fantastic.
and if the quality is what it should be, then I might have a winner.

2 issues only.

grip? it looks like it could be slippery?

2) price.
where can I buy one for decent price?

Another vote for the Mühle R89; quality is very high (both fit and finish are clearly better than with the Merkurs) and I have no issues with grip either.

The grip is better than it looks. I have no troubles with it. I also have the Muhle R106 :blushing:. It's the same head as the R89 or the EJs, only it has a black resin handle.
Even the resin(hard plastic) handle, which is smooth, has a OK grip. The R89's grip is way better.
So you shouldn't have any problems. That is you don't have soap on you hand..
There is also a Ej similar to the R89 which has lines all along the handle. I don't know the model exactly.
I admit that they grip of the HD is better. But then the HD has probably the best handle in terms of grip.

Regarding the price, you can get a R89 for aprox 25 Euros, and some 5 Euros for shiping.
You can get a R89 from the forbidden English vendor. Give me your email, in a PM, and I will give you the address.
And I know another vendor.
Just give me a Pm with your email address :)

And I want to be fair, wait for other opinions. Buy what you think it is best.
But for me, the Muhle R89 with a Super Iridium blade is the perfect combination. And more have confirmed this combo to be a superb combo ;)

Cheers,

Tiberiu

Try holding your razor more like a dart - thumb and forefinger right under the head, and the bottom balancing on your ring or pinkie finger. I find that distributes the weight better, and allows you more control over pressure.
