Merk slant revisited

I whipped out the slant tonight for another go around but instead of my regular Noxzema I used my Cremo and got the 2nd best shave to date 3 pass BBS . I can't remember who suggested I retry the slant at a later time after my first few unsuccessful attempts but you were correct:thumbup:

Always put away a tool that you are having difficulty with and break it out at a later date. I don't know how many brushes and razors that did not light me up the first or second time I used them but once I grabbed them a couple of months later they wowed me.

Oooh, now you tell me :blushing:, I just sold my slant to a member without trying it out one last time....

I can relate to this, except I sold my first too quickly, got a second after about a year or so later and didn't get very good results from it either. So I sold that one thinking that the slant just wasn't for me. About 2 years later I was reading about razor's and got some good info. on the slant. I ordered a third one and this time I took my time and learned to use it the proper way. Now I love it, and the slant has become my go to DE. I guess some people take longer to learn. :arf: :out: :frown2: :a7:

I just bought a slant from a member here (not either of the above gentlemen). It will be a few days...

i have used my slant for a few years now, they grow on you , find the right blade and stick to it as the vary a lot in this razor,i have two slants , one was my sons and could not get on with it , pressing by the looks of his face.
i used it and totally different from my own , emm ,same razor . tried another blade and it was great.
my own i use derby only, sons razor i use sharks. i used a derby in his and it was harsh.
then again i used both blades in a gillette tech ,no problem with either.

Just ordered my 39c from BullGoose. The slant seems to get the most conflicting feedback I've seen. A true YMMV DE. Had to see what the buzz is all about. Hopefully I won't be adding it to the short list of razors that I am contemplating parting with.

For some additional comments on the slant look here. IMO, this is one good razor. As long as you keep the pressure off the blade, you can get good results.

I bought a slant off another member about a month ago and straight away I was impressed, had to be one of the closest shaves I'd ever had, I guess it's like doing the 'Gillette Slide' without really trying (and much less risky) but I would say it's wise to cut your teeth on a normal DE razor, get your technique sound and then give the slant a whirl!

That's the best advice you can give anyone. I did the same thing with my slant, and also my 2011 R-41. The first times with both they cut me up, so I put them aside and went back after a few weeks or months and retried. The slant was rather easy to learn, the R-41 not so, it took over a year of on off trying before I finally got to the point where I can now pick it up and get a good no irritation, no cut shave.

I love my 37G and my vintage Merkur slant. The vintage model seems to have slightly less blade exposure compared to its modern counterpart.

I personally cannot use the slant too often it really tears up my sensitive skin but the shave sure is a close one when I do. Would you happen to know if the vintage Merk slant is as aggressive as the modern Merk?
