Menthol Crystals ok to add to shaving cream ?

Hi all ,

Have purchased some menthol crystals as I have a stinking cold at the moment, I was thinking of maybe adding some to shaving cream for the cooling effect, however on the label it has a warning that the crystals cause skin irritation and to wash hands thoroughly after handling, i am guessing that that the company is being overly cautious and these would only cause irritation if handled directly (crystals rubbed into hands for example) or if used in large amounts, also these are water soluble in hot water if that makes any difference,
Here is a link to the brand of menthol crystals I have http://www.amazon.co.uk/Care-Menthol-Crystals-Pot-BP/dp/B001PMM0TG (i hope posting the link is ok , moderators please remove if it is not)
can anyone confirm if these are ok to add to my shaving cream , thanks

Yes it is ok..Practically every muscle rub on the market has menthol in it. They are anywhere from 5-10% concentration. so you won't need very much..

I've never used menthol crystals to shaving cream, but I have added them to aftershave. For shaving cream, I use TSD M-Bomb. It's a thick menthol liquid. I place 3-4 drops on top of a loaded shave brush, and away I go to mentholand.

In my work I have compounded a lot of topical preps over the last 45 years, and have never had any problem with menthol crystals.

For simplicity you could crush a couple of crystals between a couple of teaspoons, then mix into a cream. Mix well then let it sit unused, well covered for a few days and it should dissolve well, mix again and use..

The smaller you get the menthol particles the quicker and better it will disperse into a cream. I honestly would not dissolve in alcohol then add to a cream, not knowing what the alcohol would do to the cream you are using, even though I think any effect would be minimal.
