men who died while shaving

yeah didn't say it was a terribly deep article.....I'm sure there are lots of tetanus that's been caused by shaving that never got reported.

Before I read the article I thought they would die because they will slice their throats with a razor blade.

not using barbicide or cleaning solution before using a straight razor on a different face other than yours was what we now know today as "sanitary" precaution

i imagine not to many people want to say something like " yup paw paw died while shaving, slipped and slit his own throat bless his heart"

I got moves like Jagger
I will admit I'm curious.
Nothing special. He was sitting in the chair being shaved by my dad and passed away in the process; discovery was made while re-lathering. He had some straights but mudder (mom) unable to find them and we suspect that the vultures that generally descend into a house after a death made off with them and other things.

That's something. Although death is not exactly something to be happy about, that sounds like a very peaceful way to go.

I have to admit a story like that is a lot scarier. Hopefully he went peacefully, thanks for sharing. My grandfather died in his sleep and it was very unexpected, it hit me pretty hard as a kid.

My grandfather also died while shaving. Forty years later I got his brush and Krona. Neither had been touched since that day. The razor still had the blade in it.

The whole "anthrax-on-the-shaving-brush" thing is why so many vintage brushes say "sterilized" on the handle.

until the 80s my Dad used TCP antiseptic on any nicks - he was born in 1926 so remembered life before antibiotics.

wow!..so 2 shaving deaths and 1 infected moquitoe bite

I don't think any of these men truly died from shaving.

They died from lack of adequate medical treatment. It would appear that any cut could be cause for concern, if left totally untreated, and allowed to become infected.

They could have simply cut their fingers with their pocket knife, the end result would have likely of been the same; so shaving really wasn't the culprit.

I envision an actual shaving accident leading to death being something like described above: tripped, and feel into the straight razor, slicing throat open. That would be a true death from shaving.

About John Thoreau; my understanding is that he sliced the tip of his finger while stropping his razor. He attempted to treat the wound by pressing the not totally severed portion back into place and then dressing it. Tetanus grows in an anaerobic environment and the problem is that he didn't allow for aeration. So technically, he didn't die from shaving, but from incorrect medical treatment of the wound.
