What's new

Meeting with Lee Sabini

So today I picked up a lovely L7 in Butterscotch (don't think pictures are necessary, y'all know what they look like). The big difference was that I received it from the man himself in person, rather than from the post office. I had a lovely chat with him about how he got into brush-making (long and complicated story), his favourite shaving cream or soap (Castle Forbes Lime), and just about the wet shaving world in general. He is an absolutely lovely bloke, and I hope to be able to grab a pint with him sometime in the future to discuss further. Maybe in the future I will be able to provide more insight on the man, the mystery, and the legend.

And yes he is real.

So he loves CF Lime shave cream. I knew it. The man has great taste ! Craig

I think that this is the first post that I've ever read about someone actually meeting Lee. Congratulations on your encounter, and of course, your brush.

I bet you are one of very few to have personalized door to door deliveries of your shaving products :001_smile

So tell us? Does it have HRH monogrammed on it? Or are you trying to stay "under the radar"?

Actually, some,of us would love to hear more- like how he got involved in brush making(the long/complicated story). We hear so much about how busy he is and his beautiful brushes, of course we want to know more.

Anyone care to expand? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Although I plan to get together with Lee in person later this summer, I haven't yet. But I have spent several hours on the phone with him, and he shares about himself generously. I'd love to put more out about Lee -- business, personal interests, family, perspectives, etc. He's a fascinating, unusual, and highly likable person. The reason I haven't passed along more is that I've gathered a distinct impression he prefers to maintain his privacy and doesn't wish to have a lot of publicity on the Internet. That certainly fits with the facts on the ground.

I asked Lee once (back around the time the Group Buy project was getting underway) whether he'd be willing to let me publish an "interview" with him. He's very polite, and I don't think he wanted to say "no" outright, but I didn't get a "yes" either, and the subject somehow quickly changed. I haven't pressed it with him since. Maybe he's coming around. That would be great. But for my part, I wouldn't jeopardize the relationship I've established with Lee by dealing out tidbits picked up in the course private conversations. Not unless he expressly gave his permission.

There are may B&B members who have known Lee much longer than I have. I'd guess most of them know at least as much or more from and about him than I do. I've noticed none of them offers much either.

With that said, I can appreciate his wishes for privacy. I just figured someone as prominent as he has been and is at this time, he'd be open to sharing. But I would never ask anyone to violate the trust that is established.

The level of privacy Lee keeps is nice in today's day and age with FB, Twitter and websites. It's a nice change to the "in your face" some other brush makers come off as.

I have only been in contact with Lee via email many times, as recently as today actually and he's always a pure gentleman.

+1.

Well said. We see far too many examples of 'over-exposure' in today's environment of malignant social media. I respect Lee's privacy and will continue to appreciate the beautiful brushes that he makes available.

I too appreciate his business practices. Keeps it traditional and classy.

Great to hear you got to meet him. I'd like to take him down the pub too.
