What's new

Medium Aggressive Open Combs.

After lots of research I'm pretty settled on an iKon OC Deluxe (newer model) or a Gillette Long Comb NEW. Any more suggestions? I would like it to be more aggressive than a Tech but NOT more aggressive than a 34C HD. One more thought. What is the point of a solid safety bar!!?? Why do we wittingly scrape our lather off before the blade?

You should try both the NEW LC and SC. They are both fairly easy to find and provide a different shave experience. You said you do not want something more aggressive than the 34C. The NEW SC might be just the ticket ...

I think the iKon OC Deluxe (newer version) is a very mild razor indeed. Good razor, but not "medium aggressive".

I have both razors you mentioned and really like both. I use the iKon for 80% of my shaves. You should be able to get a Gillette open come razor for a lot less then an iKon. You may want to give the Gillette a try first and see how it works for you.

For medium aggressive, the NEW Short Comb should be next to those words in the dictionary. Now, aggression is a relative term. Some thing the R41 is not aggressive. Medium aggression combined with smoothness is what I'm after. So far, the NEW SC is the ticket. Now, the NEW Long Comb is more aggressive. Maybe more efficient is a better term. You can feel the blade more, but once you get the angle down it is a darn fine shaver.

I am interested in the Ikon OC as well, but it sounds a bit too mild. I think the new ATT OC plates that are coming out in a couple of weeks will fit the bill perfectly. There will be a mild, medium and aggressive OC plate.

We'll see if the OC plates run the same way the solid bar plates do... IF they do, they'll run on the aggressive side. So "Mild" is mild relative to the other two, but that's what I'd call moderately aggressive. If the OC plates run the same way, the M2 might be exactly what the OP is looking for.

I have the Ikon OC & I would say it is medium aggressive. It is certainly way more aggressive than the Merkur open combs, which I would classify as being mild.

For me, there isn't much to choose between the Ikon OC & Gillette New LC in terms of aggressiveness. Another similarly aggressive razor is the Tradere OC, which I slightly prefer to the Ikon as it gives a smoother shave.

Agreed, I have the iKon OC and a Gillette New LC (British) and the shave is very similar between the two. Conversely, I prefer the iKon to the Tradere - as always YMMV.

Since the consensus is that the 2 razors that you are considering are similar, go with the new. It is cheap to buy, easy to resell for what you have in it, and one of my personal favorites. If you really like it, then you can look at spending more for the ikon. Or get your new replated. :thumbup1:

Thanks everyone! I am bidding on a NEW Long Comb as we speak!

And now I just edited this post because I bought one! Gillette NEW Short Comb in gold.

Congrats. You are going to love that razor. You will love it even more if you pair it with a heavy aftermarket handle, like a Weber Classic or Bulldog, a Cadet, Ikon.....there are so many heavy brass based or SS handles that will make that NEW shave like a dream.

Congratulations, the Gillette NEW is a great razor. I agree that a new heavier handle will make it much better.
