MdC: Scented or Unscented?

When shelling out $60 it's important to at least pick the right product of the two. Kind of conflicted on which to go with.

Scented:

- from what I gather most people don't really like the scent
- has fragrances which might irritate skin

Unscented:

- truly a 100% natural shaving soap
- still has a bit of a scent

I'm still not entirely sold on even getting MdC but I'm getting there :001_tt2:.

Scented all day. One of my top three for soaps in the scent department. If you don't like the scent you can easily unload it on the BST without losing a penny and buy the unscented.

BTW I have pretty sensitive skin and it is 100% sensitive skin friendly

The scented smells like Noxema. I wasn't sure about it at first (and it was very strong at first) but it has both grown on me a little and mellowed out. Not one of my favorite scents, but pleasant. As many have stated in the past, the unscented obviously isn't scent free and many find the scent of the "unscented" to have some harsh properties. I would say get the scented if you are going to get one.

True, I do think if you are spending this much money you better be using the scented unless you have a reaction or hate the scent of the scented. How do you think the performance compares to Mystic Water and Mike's?

I like the scent of the Regular Martin De Candre soap but the essential oils used irritate my skin so I'm now using only the unscented version.

I would say that mikes and mystic have nothing on MDC. Not saying mikes and mystic are bad, there some amazing soaps but nowhere near the performance and protection of MDC. Also MDC will last quite a bit longer.

In my MdC soap even the scented version is very mild and if anything I would like much more scent. Any less would be well, unscented.

Scented. I wished my smelled like Noxzema but it doesnt. To me its a smoky, herbaceous(rosemary), lavender scent. Love it! To me its way overpriced but if you are into that kind of scent then go for it. Many artisan soaps are far better IMHO. Mike's blows MdC away in the performance department.

without a doubt, SCENTED. i've had the ladies at work sniff the MdC scented and they ALL love it. that's good enough for me

unscented, still smells, just not as nice. same performance as unscented, but a more earthy smell to it.

scented, smells very nice to my nose and the ladies at work, and if you want to air it out a bit, do what MdC recommends and leave the lid off at ALL times. i leave my lid on, when not in use to preserve the scent.

really? i've seen other say that X or Y was comparible, but never BLOWS it away in terms of performance. :001_unsur

No, it does not. MdC is quite literally a soap made directly from a performance standpoint. It's stupidly overpriced and the recipe has absolutely zero attention paid to anything BUT performance, but it is not outperformed by any artisan soap. That's like saying that Diet Dr Pepper tastes more like Regular Dr Pepper.

yeah, i kind of new that :wink2: not sure how MdC does it with so little ingredients, but based on soap used per shave and all things considered (170ml vs 100-150ml from others, container, shipping), it's not overpriced. yes, it's a big initial investment, but it lasts a long, long time.

the overall process of how they make MdC is quite interesting: Manufacturing of MdC and includes a 5 month drying time, which may be the difference between MdC and others, who knows, i'm not a soap maker and don't claim to be an expert on this process.

all i know is, if it was that easy to make and other artisans could copy or clone MdC, why haven't they done it :confused1...i'm guessing, it's because it's not cost beneficial for them to do so and the actual price of MdC is justified in my mind. :001_cool:

My 2 cents is that MdC is amazing, but the unscented smells like a stove pipe thats been used all winter. Kind of a rustic smell that I have good memories associated with, but I'd hardly pick that scent over any other scented product.

When I would put the MdC jar on the counter before entering the shower, when I came out it would have loaded itself by itself.

Yes it is good.

I no longer have it.

IMO AOS and Mikes are arguably at least as good with far better scents and that's what I use now.

Actually to my skin AOS and Mikes have better moisturizing.

Must be the tallow and lanolin in Mikes case:thumbup:

YMMV as always

don't forget, you can wave your brush over top of it without even touching it and get enough lather for a 5 pass shave with lather to spare :glare:

Yes, that due to the high unicorn horn content!

To SliceofLife's statement that MdC isn't outperformed by any artisan soap...to me, both Razorock Artisans (the older ones) and Calani both outperform MdC and are artisan soaps... and they smell better to boot. Just started using Mikes and am very impressed so far. Once I dial it in, it may give MdC a run for its money as well.

Do yourself a favor and get a sample of the scented MdC from Garry's Sample Shop. That will help you decide without making a $60 blind buy.
