MdC Heresy and a solution for those who don't like the scent.

I was on the road last week where I rely on Proraso red for shaving. After a couple days with the great Proraso sandalwood scent, I was back home and getting ready to lather up the MdC for the evening shave. Standing there, I found myself musing on the Sandalwood scent and wishing that MdC would make one like it...or at least one with their fougere scent.

It only took a minute or so for me to go from musing to speculating on what an MdC/Proraso blend would be like. Would the Lavender MdC scent overpower the Proraso? What would the shaving qualities be like? Is mixing them even legal? Could I ever speak of this to others? If I did reveal my secret, would it result in being banned from the board?

I opened the bathroom window, took a big hunk of caution and tossed it out into a stiff breeze.

Using only 1/3 of a snurdle (precisely measured by my NIST sanctioned snurdler), I lathered up the two with a borrowed shavemac and went to town. It needs no elaboration that the lather was voluminous and high quality. Seems in that department the MdC shows no hesitation about slumming with the Proraso and the creamy Italian soap was more than happy to canoodle with its refined French counterpart. What was surprising, and delightful, is that the MdC scent completely disappeared and instead was replaced by the Proraso sandalwood. It was great. A best of both worlds combination.

It feels wrong making any change to such an expensive product as the MdC, something like dropping a few ice cubes into a vintage port, but I urge any of you who are not fond of the scent to give it a try. I did this several times in a row and noticed no diminution in the quality of the lather. I seem to get great skin care properties out of the MdC and they were undiminished. If you try it, maybe with your own favorite cream, then let us know how it works.

And Mods...am I in trouble?

I just got a small jar of the unscented MdC in the mail this week. I like the scent. The regular scented MdC is some nasty stuff, IMO, but an absolutely superb shaving soap. Leaving the container open minimizes the scent to the point where I can use it but not really enjoy it. Unscented is the way to go for me.

I'm going to try this when my mdc arrives. I do love me some proraso sandalwood, it always goes with me when I'm away now. But first I need to get a new snurdler I think mine has lost it calibration.

Mark, great for you! i love it when gents take an unorthodox approach to things, sacred. To be honest, i could care less for MdC. This is the second time that i have tried it and i am not overly impressed. i much prefer Mike's and Mystic Water to it, especially for the price. Of course, this is just my opinion and YMMV. Boy, i love using that abbreviation when i state my opinion. Enjoy your new concoction, Merlin! Hee hee.

MDC's one of my favorites but it's still just a soap.

They wouldn't have to make it with their scented product as a base. I'd buy a sandalwood MDC. Sandalwood's my favorite scent.

Poor analogy IMO. Not everyone buys MDC for its scent as evidenced by their unscented offering. Given how MDC seems to do things they didn't decide to offer the unscented lightly.

To be honest, i could care less for MdC.

I have the MdC in the wood bowl and therefore uncovered. The strength of the scent quickly disappates when left open. I prefer little to no scents with my soaps so this works well for me. During the winter I pull out my DB scuttle and often whip up super-lathers. That said, a fear of 10 plauges being visited upon me during Pasach keeps me from using MdC with such mash-ups.

It would be fun to add a bit of something like Castle Forbes Limes or Tabac shaving cream to MdC and see how it goes. We may be onto a really significant breakthrough! I must go on record to say I greatly appreciate the scent of MdC, and will love the new Fougere fragrance a hundred times more. I have no complaints with MdC. Nor do I have any complaints with any other products that perform up to my expectations.

Soap without scent is like a beautiful woman without clothes...what's the point??

Wait. That's a bad analogy. Let me try another approach.

I like scents. More than that, scents evoke deep and strong memories and emotions and using unscented products when there's no medical necessity removes about half the pleasure in the usage. Over the last few months, I've grown to like the MdC scent quite a lot, but Proraso smells like these long walks I used to take when I was a kid with my german shepherd along the creek bottom on our farm. I'll risk a plague or two for that memory.

Huh? Is that a locust on my windowsill?
