Mattress suggestions

The Mrs. and I are in need of a new matress as our current one is about 10 years old. We like to buy high-quality and do it right the first time. However, I find the matress industry highly suspect with snake oil sales, rebranding, drastic price differences, etc... Any advice?

I've heard GREAT things about the Sleep Number beds. When it's time to replace ours, I'm going to look into those. They seem perfect for couples.

I used to sell mattresses in my friend's store. It is the biggest whore business in the world including, well, whoring. The markup is ridiculous. I sold the same mattress for $800 and $400, depending on how I felt at the time.

Don't get a pillowtop mattress. They're great for a while, but then you wind up sleeping in a trough. You can't flip the thing, either.

Our next buy will be either a SleepNumber or Tempur-Pedic.

I have a friend who recommends this place if you know what you're looking for and might want a better price. Never been there though so I have no idea how the place really is ...

I bought the most expensive mattress the had at IKEA instead (me being Swedish and all)

Kingsdown. Unbelievable.

I've had mine for five or six years now. It's a pillowtop and I flip it with no problem at all (pillowtop on both sides).

I thought about a Tempur-Pedic until I slept on one. If you don't move, it's great. It's also weirdly uncomfortable when it's cold.

I bought a house this year and will be recieving the 8k rebate with my taxes this year.

I was planning on getting a sleep number bed.

Does anyone here actually own one?

I will be getting a king size so it is a pretty big investment.

I own a Tempur-Pedic and I absolutely love it. My wife likes a firm matress, and I like a soft mattress, but we both love the Tempur-Pedic!

It was definitely spendy, but after I bought it I noticed 3 things..

1) My arms no longer fell asleep at night.

2) I tended to wake up far less often.

3) It was seriously different for amorous behaviour...no bounce effect at all!:w00t:

No bouncing? Awwww... :001_tongu

But seriously, they rate mattresses for "dancing with the wife" here:

They also rate other attributes if anyone cares about them.

If cost is not a problem, I would highly recommend a Hastens bed.

Handmade in Sweden with natural materials (like horsehair) and will last forever.

I got to sample them at the local store and was greatly impressed with them.

Wish I could afford one though!

"The Swedish bed manufacturer -- pronounced HESS-tens -- has been in business since 1852 and makes beds that cost anywhere from $4,750 to $59,750."

I don't like my brother in law's tempurpedic mattress at all. Laying perfectly still it's fine, but roll or move and it's just...weird. Plus, it kills my back.

The wife and I went and bought a middle of the range mattress. We laid on a bunch of them and found the level of firmness we wanted. There was a big difference between the cheap one and the middle one, but we hardly felt a difference at all stepping up to the real expensive one. We've had it about 2 and a half years. Perhaps it won't hold up as well as the expensive one, but so far we've been happy.

My parents dropped a big chunk of change on a stearns and foster. They have been very happy with it.

+1, especially regarding "relations." :blushing:

Ikea has a great range of fairly inexpensive but decent matresses. Because they're not too expensive, you can also buy a new set every few years without breaking the bank.
