matching tobaccos to pipes

So, now that I'm in over my head, I'm starting to realize that I need to consider keeping certain tobaccos out of certain pipes.. or dedicating a specific pipe to a specific tobacco or type of tobacco. I've kinda just smoked everything in all my pipes, and want to get more organized about it. I gather that keeping aros to one pipe and latakia blends to another is a bare minimum to keep ghosting from messing up a more subtle blend. Maybe this is a dumb question, but are there certain types of tobaccos that smoke better in certain styles of pipes? ..I'm just curious how far some of you are taking this, or how laid back some of you are about it. Please share your thinking about how you choose what pipe to smoke a certain tobacco in, or maybe lists of blends that share the same pipe, or blends that should never share the same pipe.. I realize that's pretty wide open, but I could use some clarity on this topic as I try to sort it out.

I'm pretty laid back. No empirical proof behind this, but I like to (and think they smoke better) smoke aromatics in a cob. I usually pull out a nice aro when there is company around and they get a kick out of seeing a blast from the past cob. Other than that, I don't make a connection besides not smoking aromatics in a pipe I use for other 'baccy.

The only real rule is that flakes that you fold and stuff should be in tall narrow bowls, but that's mostly to be able to accommodate the shape of the flake. A folded and stuffed flake wouldn't fit very well in a prince shaped pipe.

Some pipes seam to do better with certain tobaccos, these pipes have some uncalculable factor that just makes a certain style or blend sing, but you never know until you try them with it.

That sums it up very well.

The only thing I smoke in one style pipe is my Prince Albert. It just shines so well in a cob. Now that is not saying that is the best pipe for drug store burley it just works for me. Weather it is aesthetics or performance I couldn't tell you. I just like my cheap burley in a cob.

I never was one to subscribe to the pipe dedication mantra but I will admit that I do have one Nording bulldog that has only ever had Shortcut to Mushrooms smoked out of it. Only reason is that was the first tobacco I grabbed and put into that pipe and it just seems to match up nicely so when the mood for StM strikes I grab that pipe... It's a good 45 minute smoke which is just about right for that blend.

I have some pipes that I use for VA & VaPers, and others I use for English blends. My list of aros that I like is pretty short, and I have 3 Peterson 999's and a couple other smaller pipes that are pretty much dedicated to those individually (BCF & English Chocolate share one). Cobs would serve that purpose just as well. The meers I put whatever in when I feel like smoking 'em, since they really don't ghost at all.

Add Lakelands to the dedicated pipe list.....

I don't have a lot of pipes by any measure - quite the opposite, really.

Stanwell Silver Band: VAs and VaPers

Bjarne Copenhagen Saucer: Latakia blends

Bjarne Elephant's Foot: Latakia blends, but Esoterica Pembroke in particular

MM General Cobwarden: VAs and VaBur blends

MM Diplomat: Lakelands

MM Missouri Pride: Aros and blind tests

Want to pick up a flake/rope pipe with a smaller bowl. Had a chance to test a Tsuge Bent Pot that would be perfect, and it smoked great.

I am pretty much an English blend guy. If I smoke SG Grousemoor it is in my cob. If I started smoking perique blends more often I would probably dedicate a pipe to that.

This is how I would have guessed most of you roll.. maybe I'm just wanting to get some structure in place because I went from 0-100 in a short time, and Im a little overwhelmed.

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

I do this to some extent for the size and shape of the bowl, not so much because of flavor, Lakelands in meers only though for me.

So far, I have not yet assigned specific pipes to specific blends. I just reach for whichever pipe and whichever tobacco I feel like smoking at the time.

I do have a few combos that I prefer, but there is nothing particularly planned about it. However, I do think this article is pretty interesting on the topic of matching blends to bowl shapes: REDACTED

Thanks for linking those articles, WithTheGrain and blade boy.. that's the stuff I was looking for.. overkill, even.. nice!

+1, especially interesting is the related articles from passion for pipes regarding "combustion zone, condensation zone and distillation zone" explanations and subsequent discussions.
