What's new

Master Bay Rum

Question: is there a difference between the green label and the black label? I went to Sally's today to get some before the restraint period starts and noticed the two different bottles. The ingredients were identical but the scent seemed a bit different. The green label was more bay rum-ish while the black label, to me, smelled more like Old Spice. Thoughts?

Looking at it again, it's a very dark green as opposed to black but nevertheless, it's a different label. Sorry that it's turned.

I would be surprised if they had 2 different bay rum scents. You might be seeing a new label and the other one just has not been sold out of stock yet.

Where they both in the same slot or did they each have their own slot on the shelf (like 2 different products)?

Both in the same spot, same ingredients, same price, etc. To me though this one smelled just a little different than the green label. It still smells awesome but just different.

I thought it was black but it's a dark green.

As for ingredients
old bottle: Deionized Pure Water, SD Alcohol 40, Glycerin, Bay Oil, D&C Yellow #5, FD & C Yellow #6.
new bottle: Water (Aqua/Eau) Pimenta Acris (Bay) Leaf Oil, DS Alchol 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6.

I don't see Glycerin.

Reformulated? It looks like it.

Why do manufacturers always think that NEW is better.

I HATE NEW.....

Give me the products I have grown to love and LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!!!

GEES....

I guess that's why there was only one bottle on the shelf at Sally's when I bought mine the other day. It was the old green label. I used it for the second time today. This time I used a lot and it was better than the first time but I still prefer others

No glycerin? What a shame! That's the big draw of Master BR for me, along with the great (non-clove) scent. I hope they're not taking the glycerin out of their other ASes as well, e.g., Challenge. Why on earth would they shoot themselves in the foot that way?!

Went back to switch it out and the normal light green labeled bottle had the same exact ingredients as this new dark label (ie no glycerin). Looks like it is true...it's been reformulated. Damn.

I find it interesting that the Bay Oil has moved past the alcohol in the ingredients, by volume. I wonder if it has an emollient effect that might make up for the missing glycerin. I'd also guess that the scent would be longer-lasting, and possibly even more "authentic." Hmmmm. I think it's time to sally forth to Sally's.

I noticed the same thing in a Sally's in my neck of the woods. They had one bottle each of the green & dark label. To be fair, no one knows if the dark label is replacing the green. It may be another, glycerin free, offering. Time will tell.

Hopefully, they ARE replacing it, and I can talk up how much better the old formulation is, and in a year or two, when interest is at a fever pitch, put my Vintage Master Green Label Bay Rum AS up for auction! The bidding can start at $50...

This is Madness!! I love Master's Bay Rum. I can not imagine a better performing clean bay rum scented aftershave. Lasts a considerably reasonable amount of time also. If they are facing that out, I will have to go to another Bay Rum. i must have Bay Rum.

well darn, my barber slapped some of this on me last time I was in and I was all set to buy a bottle now that they've changed it I imagine that I'll still be Bay Rumless.

I went to Sally's in Durham, North Carolina, 2 weeks ago. They still have the green label with glycerin. A pleasant scent and you surely get a lot for the money compared the little 4 ounces bottles that sell for a lot of 12 to 18 dollars or more. It really leaves my face feeling better after a shave.

Another good bay rum for cheap is Superior 70. You can get it at any Hispanic grocery store for $1.99. It is from Puerto Rico. A sweeter scent. From the online shaving shops you'll pay several dollars more for it.

Another two buck bay rum is Bay Rum Constanza, also from the Hispanic grocery stores. I don't think there is any cloves or spices in it other than the bay rum mixed in alcohol. I added some menthol crystals and it's refreshing.

I like Master the best and have used menthol in it.

Oh, there were 4 bottles of the Master at Sally's and I left one for some other lucky soul. The price had gone from $6.99 a month before to 8.99.
