Marijuana legal for recreational use in Colorado/Washington

My opinion is that it should be used the way alcohol is supposed to be used, not the way cigarettes are. If you want to enjoy it during your free time, during the football game, after work, etc, have at it. If you're standing outside your office building during your lunch break and you're smoking a joint, that's probably not a good idea. The same way it's probably not a good idea to go out to lunch and start pounding down shots of Patron when you have to return to work, drive home, etc. If you show up for work stoned, your employer should be allowed to fire you, the same way he or she could or would if you showed up for work drunk.

Like I said, too much of any good thing, whether it's doughnuts, or video games, or alcohol, or sex, or marijuana is not a good thing.

There are other legal obstacles that Colorado and Washington state are facing. The following comes from this article: http://www.foxbusiness.com/government/2012/11/09/regulatory-catch-22-legalized-marijuana/

While voters in Colorado and Washington legalized the recreational sale and use of marijuana, the federal restrictions on drug use are setting up a regulatory nightmare. Just look at the potential trap banks are in.

They cannot lend or handle payroll for any company in the business because that would be a violation of federal drug money-laundering laws.
Some banks could argue that means they cannot even be a conduit for all the tax money promised from legalization because, from a federal perspective (and, for national banks, the federal perspective is all that matters), marijuana is still illegal. If they do business with marijuana shops, banks in these states could face civil or even criminal penalties.

These huge roadblocks will make it difficult, if not impossible, to institutionalize the business infrastructure of pot, and therefore make it difficult to collect taxes. And taxes are needed since studies show increased drug use leads to increased crime – and someone has to pay for the police.
"If financial institutions are federally licensed or insured, they must comply with federal regulations, and those regulations are clear about conducting financial transactions with money generated by the sale of narcotics," Jim Dowling, a former Internal Revenue Service special agent who was also an anti-money laundering adviser to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, told Thomson Reuters.

Clearly, changes in Federal law and regulations are going to have to happen in order for businesses to be set up.

Back on topic;

I assume that this still has to get past the federal government, Yes? If this sticks, how long will it take to evolve to other, and all states? This, at least, seems to be the beginning of tolerance on the issue?

Do they test for alcohol consumption? No, because drinking is socially acceptable. If marijuana is legal, they would have no more reason to disqualify you for a position than if you drank a few scotch and sodas each evening.

I don't know about alcohol, but there are businesses that don't hire smokers. And it is legal for them to do so.

Why can't we discuss the pros/cons of marijuana as it RELATES to the laws passed on CO/WA?

The pros and cons of use is not the issue. That was decided by the voters. This is about the legislation that successfully passed.

And here's another issue that I came across regarding Washington and Colorado legalizing marijuana use. Marijuana tourism. It happened in the Netherlands and became a problem there. What is in place to prevent the same sort of problems in those states?

If it bothers you so much, why don't you just delete the thread? It doesn't look like people are even listening to you.

The person who isn't listening to him is you.

Keep it up, and he won't have to listen to you at all.

I'm honestly trying to insert points of discussion on this topic. I hope this thread doesn't wind up locked because of gents not paying attention.

Let's talk about how awful the New York Giants are playing right now. They're playing so poorly, I think they might be stoned.

(Defusing tension while remaining topical.)

Slightly off-topic here, but it was mentioned earlier. What are the purported medical benefits of smoking marijuana? I was not aware there were any actual benefits, just that it wasn't as bad as once thought. What is the official consensus?

"Medical Marijuana for Cancer Patients

It has proven in many studies, performed by prestigious scientific and medical organizations and individuals, that medical marijuana can (and does) relieve pain and nausea. In fact, some of these studies go as far back as the 1970s and older.

For instance, in 1975, the New England Journal of Medicine published the results of a "double-blind" study on the effects of oral (ingested rather than smoked) tetrahydrocannabinol on nausea and vomiting. According to the study, "No patient vomited while experiencing a subjective "high". Oral tetrahydrocannabinol has antiemetic properties and is significantly better than a placebo in reducing vomiting caused by chemotherapeutic agents."

A 1999 report by the Institutes of Medicine concluded, "In patients already experiencing severe nausea or vomiting, pills are generally ineffective, because of the difficulty in swallowing or keeping a pill down, and slow onset of the drug effect. Thus an inhalation (but, preferably not smoking) cannabinoid drug delivery system would be advantageous for treating chemotherapy-induced nausea."

Thanks for playing fellas.

As per the TOU, discussion of illegal activities isn't something we do here.

2. Realize that we take great pride in B&B being a work-friendly, internet oasis for gentlemanly behavior. This means that profanity, inflammatory comments regarding politics and/or religion, personal attacks, pornographic images, discussions of illegal or illicit activity, or any other ungentlemanly behavior as deemed inappropriate by the Administrators/Moderators, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Offenders will be dealt with swiftly. More to the point, if it's likely to be offensive, or if you wouldn't say it to someone in person, it doesn't belong here.
