Manual Burr Coffee Grinder

In my 'continued' efforts to make better coffee I got myself a burr coffee grinder and since I like things that are manual...I settled on the Hario Mini Slim one. Great quality and grinds quickly - used it twice so far and so far so good :)
I use it to grind a more coarse ground for my H2JO.

At $30 w/ free shipping it was a great deal.

Here's a video (not mine) showing it a bit better:

Nice. Does it do an espresso grind? That is where less expensive grinders usually don't measure up. Most will do a perfectly decent drip, perk, or FP grind and are a sensible purchase IMHO if you don't do espresso or Turkish.

I have a Hario Mini on order and got the same $30 shipped from SCG (added it to an existing order to get the free shipping)

They are supposed to excel at espresso (fine) grinding but lack in the press (coarse) grinds.

Orphan espresso has a mod for the Skerton (not the mini) that makes them better pour over and press grinders (at the expense of espresso)

I use it for coarse and it is a tad inconsistent - I quite a different sizes on the coarse setting. It's not too bad though and I love the size and quality of this grinder.

I have read a number of reviews where people are happy using this as an espresso grinder. If you are interested in tweaking it, this guy discusses how he uses a Kyocera grinder of a similar design. Adding a couple of extra steps is probably a good idea.

The video is mainly about La Pavoni, but the grinder commentary starts here:

I use the same grinder daily for my french press.
It works like a dream.
I also use a Moka Pot and Aeropress and never change the grind setting.
It is perfect for my taste and needs.

How is the consistency in your ground coffee? I get some larger chunks, some middle and some dust.
It's hard to figure out exactly where to turn the adjusting knob to as well as there is no indicator (I know clockwise is finder and counterclock is coarser).

Apart from that it's a really nice, well built grinder that grinds surprisingly fast.

That's what I use for my French press. I have it opened almost to the point the nut would come off. I have not thoroughly examined the grind, however it is coarse and I don't get floaters in my coffee and no more sediment than you would expect to have in a French press cup at the bottom.

Thanks I'll open it up even wider tomorrow and give that a try :)

I've been using this grinder for most of 2013 and it's an excellent grind and capacity for my Aeropress. I haven't tried it with anything else but I'm sure it'd be great. I tend to use a medium-coarse grind. It's a whole other world of coffee when you use that burr grinder, isn't it?

I have a rosewood one with a little drawer, and a bodum french press, and my coffee is the object of envy for a couple barista friends of mine. One of which wouldn't believe me that I buy my coffee beans at the supermarket, lol!

Manual burr grinders FTW, I'm glad you guys all like yours!

I have 2 hand grinders. One set up for fine grind espresso the other set up for med/coarse grind pour over and press (Orphan espresso bottom bearing modified).

If the wife sleeps in I use the hand grinder so that I don't make too much noise and wake her.

I've used them at other times but I prefer my weight based electric grinders. Select the weight, push the button, walk away, come back and have the perfect quantity of perfectly ground coffee waiting.

I actually kinda like the manual grinder..makes me feel good to use something that doesn't require anything but my power to work..that and..well, it helps waking me up as well :)

Friday I got up, something was off, couldn't figger what until I stumbled into the bath & the lights were off. Ok, have a real good idea where the equipment is, out to the kitchen to call Detroit Edison on the land line so they can find me ..

Needed coffee, then realized the grinder wouldn't work .. panic, until the Skerton with the mod mentioned above was recalled then found, it worked great, after I realized I needed a match to start the stove burner! The mod is fiddly, but gives a pretty good coarse grind for the press ..

Used the manual again today to see if I could dial in the grind, still very good stuff

Agree if you are coffee addicted then a manual grinder and some way to heat water, whether that is a gas stove or LPG grill is mandatory.

I have some hand grinders (the usual suspects and a few others) along with a vintage Pefection Kerosene Stove heater that has a surface on top designed to sit a kettle on - I am ready!
