Mama Bear Musing - Aged Spice

As I shared (over-shared?) in another thread, my wife and I were "shopping while intoxiocated". We ended up with several sampler packs of soap from Mama Bear's and I tried some out this morning.

The soap was very nice. I have never tried a glycerin soap before. It was nice and creamy, had a good glide to it, all in all what I'd like from a soap. There has been some talk about the base used by Momma Bear as being widely available at a reduced price - I'm not worried about that. I can buy rendered animal fat pretty cheap too but I don't want to have to go through that to save money. It was delivered in a pie-shaped slice of soap which I just stuck to the bottom of a shave mug and whipped up.

The fragrance I tried was the "Aged Spice" soap. The smell was nice, probably very close to the original but of course I have nothing to compare it to. The smell was not overpowering but is definitely long-lasting. No after-shave needed and people are still asking me what I am wearing at noon.

So, I give it a favorable rating, and I'll move on to the next of a crap-ton of diffferent fragrances tomorrow.

Her samples are a great way to try things out and check for sensitivity without committing a lot of money.

The shave soap scent lasted on you until noon. I am guessing you shaved 3-5 hours earlier. Even after you rinsed your face after shaving. Wow, that's a long time.

I, too, recently received a sampler of Mamma Bear's, and it is the first glycerin soap I have used. I'm having a lot of trouble lathering it to the proper consistency. Any tips or tricks as to how much / little water to use compared to a DRH hard soap or a proraso cream? Haven't gotten the knack for it yet.

I don't use either of those but I can tell you how I worked it out. I have a big @$$ mug™ I use for whipping up a lather:

I heated up the mug with hot water, poured it out, and stuck the little wedge to the bottom. Then I took my pre-soaked Vie-Long natural horse, gave it a flick to shake out the extra water, and went to town for about 20 seconds in the mug, I dripped a few drops of water from my hand after that and worked it in again and I was done. I had a three-pass load as easily as I ever had it from a tallow soap.

Offhand I'd say less water than the Trumper's I use.

Thanks for the advice. I've heard a lot of gents really like Mamma Bears, I hope I can get the hang of it and join the club. My philosophy is that if anyone else can truly enjoy something, it must be worth enjoying!

I received a Mama Bear's Almond as part of a razor deal. It lathers and shaves well and the scent is long-lasting and strong.

I like to pour warm water on top of the puck, and let it soak for at least 5 minutes. I usually just let it soak while I shower. Dump the water off the soap. If the soap hasn't been used for a few days or more, there is oftentimes a film on top of the soap that slides off when you pour out the water. I then wet my brush, shake almost all the water out, leaving the brush simply damp, not dripping wet. Load the brush on the puck vigorously for about 30 seconds, then face lather for close to 2 minutes. Cheers!

I gave Mama Bears soaps a third and final try tonight. Just as in the previous two tries, it burned the hell out of my face. I did, however, finally get a fairly decent lather. Not much slickness, but plenty of cushion.

I gave them a honest try, but it looks like her soaps just don't agree with me.
