I’ve been doing some more experiments, and this one turned out pretty good.

It is a mix of Bright leaf Virginia, Burley and Dark Fired. Treated with a little molasses, vinegar and propylene glycol. Rolled into a log and wrapped in canvas. Then wrapped the canvas with rope very very tight. Left to ferment for about two weeks. Moisture is still around 40% so I had to let the coins dry quite a bit before smoking.

very cool! how did you determine what ratios to use for the molasses/PPG/vinegar (i guess you said it was an experiment, but just curious how you started).

I have a suspicion that McClelland used clove extract in their topping which gives it that singular tin note. Or maybe even all spice. But definitely something other than vinegar.

If we all ask nicely maybe a trade could be worked out in the Exchange with Mike.
