Maintaining Engraving On Blade During Restore

This is only my second restoration so I am still learning. I do most of my work by hand and with a dremel. My current project is a FILARMONICA #14 with a slightly faded gold emblem on the blade reading "Doble Temple" I will post pics tommorow as my camera battery is dead. After much research I decided on using nail polish to protect the engraving during clean up. I put down 4 layers, but I'm still afraid to go at it with a dremel wire brush or even sand paper. Any suggestions on the matter? I really don't want to **** it up as it is a beautiful razor I got for a steal in a French antique shop. Only 20 euros and everything including the scales are in great condition. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
