Mags and books?

Well I've heard that the Habanos book is pretty good and that Cigar Aficionado is 90% ads. I haven't seen or heard anything else about other publications. I mostly prefer the sites I find online, they are more up to date with information and you don't have ads infront of you all the time.

I was looking for pipe stuff actually, but failed to mention it, lol. Thanks for poitning that out, Hunter!

The magazine that the guy from JR's put out was pretty decent for cigars. I think it was just called "cigars". Reviews seemed honest and decent articles.

And if you can find it An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Post-Revolution Havana Cigars is phenomenal.

CA is just awful, imo.

Any pipe ones worth checking out?

I've been looking for a nice book about pipes but no book stores I've been to carry anything... I assume the anti's pushing for that. Pipemagazine.com has a lot of information on it. I am going to try to hit up some second hand book stores this weekend hopefully I'll find something good... if it pans out maybe we can start a BL book swap!

I've seen random posts here and there about the books members of B&B are reading. Just thinking out loud, but that I thought another sub forum for things we read would be kind of nice. Or maybe it might just end up being me and Hunter in there. lol

  • jzuzphreek would be there with us as well... I would actually really like a Book subforum, The Library would be a good name. I think we should look into making this a thing!

I wonder who would have to ask/bother/harass to make this happen...

I posted in the site feedback forum. Lets see if something happens! I would love to have a dedicated forum on literature. The Barbershop sort of fits but it really feels like it is more for all the other things in life, where books and reading are a fairly big part of my life both fiction and non-fiction.

Golden Child sorry for co-opting your thread... but if we get this going more members would take a look at a question like this and maybe give you more answers!

Just finished reading Dr. Fred Hanna's 'In Search of the Perfect Smoke' for the third time; while I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, I definitely enjoy reading it!
Project Gutenburg (a free-to-use ebook service) has several exceptional writings on tobacco that have become public domain, particularly works penned prior to the 1950's, which we would be hard-pressed to find in print, including 'Tobacco; It's History, Varieties, Culture, Manufacture and Commerce' (E.R. Billings, 1875), 'Tobacco in Colonial Virginia, The Sovereign Remedy' (Melvin Herndon, 1957), and 'The Social History of Smoking' (G.L. Aperton, 1914). You can also find some less obscure works on tobacco there, such as the vaunted 'Our Lady Nicotine'...and of course, lots of other exceptional works on just about any topic. I'm not affiliated with the project, but I really wish I was...

Pipes and Tobacco Magazine is probably the best for pipes. The content is quality, although it's a little light. 30 minutes is about all you need to read an issue.

I know some people in the pipe-smoking world do not care for Richard Carleton Hacker's books, but I have read most of them and once you get past his self-indulgency they are pretty informative and a decent read. I believe most of them you can find on amazon.

I did Some searching and found a great place for books abebooks.com. Very good pricing and you can have a choice of used and possibly new. I buy all my books from there.

+1 I got a subscrition to it. Good read, but like he said it doesn't take a lot of time to get through it. Also Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization is a great read full of all kinds of interesting information. Tobacco covers everything in the tobacco world till about 2005ish, but doesn't feel like reading an encyclopedia. The author does a really good job keeping you entertained.

Also Back From The Ashes: Uncovering the Lost History of G. L. Hunt and the Falcon Pipe is a great book on the history and creation of the falcon metal pipe. I'm a fan of metal pipes so I enjoyed it, but I don't think most people would.

Cigar journal has a small pipe section I believe and cigar snob is a great cigar mag too. Don't forget cigar and spirits magizine
