What's new

Made my first shaving soap today.

Am I doing it right? $photo (1).jpg

It looks a bit wet to me and the bubble structure appears to be a bit too large and "foamy". It doesn't look very cushioning and I think it would probably work better with a thicker, more dense lather. Good on you for trying though.

Faub, that doesn't look bad at all for a first attempt at making a shaving soap. The bubbles could be too much water in your brush/bowl when lathering or not lathering up long enough -- or that the soap needs tweaking. Spread the lather on your face or hand to see if it stays or disappears after a couple of minutes. If the lather does a disappearing act, you need to tweak the soap.

Nice work! How does it shave?

Also, did you make it via cold or hot process? (If you made it via cold process, you may want to wait 4 weeks or so for it to cure, so it's not too harsh to shave with.)

It's a pretty sweet feeling to have a shaving soap you made yourself from the raw ingredients, no?

I think we could get a better "feel" if you spread a little on your skin to see how it looks. Hard to tell from it being on the brush.

im interested in how you made this, i would like to make my own soap too. i like how the lather looks actually, i prefer wet lather like that, different strokes different folks i guess

here ya go! I used hot process. Thinking of doing the milling process on it (as best you can at home). Any thoughts on this? I would love to send a few off conus and get some feedback 8)

I applaud your effort. I would like to get around to doing some of this some day....

Just keep plugging away. Let us know how it works with your shaves.

I wouldn't bother milling it at home.

How does it shave?

I'd probably make sure you can get a thick whipped cream lather, and that it's slick and good for shaving, and that the soap is gentle enough to use regularly, before sending off samples to people on the forum. If it's not perfect, you might want to get the kinks worked out before the imperfections are broadcast online.

YMMV.

If you can get lather that looks like this - http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/330271-Stirling-Soap-Naked-and-Smooth-shave-pucks - then you'll be well on your way.

Good luck!
