What's new

Mac Computers

So I'm lookin at buying one. Does anyone here know if the new ones came out recently or if they are coming out soon? I'd hate to go buy one and find out that they are releasing new models in a month

As far as I know, no new models are coming out. There will probably be an update to the iPod Touch next month.

You generally run the risk of technology updating or changing when you buy any electronic, but this can be especially annoying with Apple.

If you have an university e-mail address, there is a discount going on right now through September.

ok march is far enough away where I don't mind. I don't have a university address I went to a small school and graduated 5 years ago. But one of my best friends is still in college, so it looks like he will be buying my computer!

Do they do the discount in-store? I might have to take a road trip to delaware soon. and pick one up tax-free
thanks

If you order the Mac online, they will give you free shipping. You can also get the discount online.

If you order a new Mac and they come out with a new one before they send yours out, they will switch it free of charge. I ordered my Macbook Pro a few weeks before they came out with the latest ones, and they switched it for me.

If you are looking for a new laptop, I'd wait until after their September "Music" event. They've been known to update the laptop line in September. Not really coming out with any new features, just updating the speed.

Apple can be very frustrating in how they introduce new models.
I bought my Mac Book Pro about 4 years ago now and when I did, they came out with a new processor upgrade in 2 months.
The worst is when you purchase one and they drop the prices.
Apple customer service is very good though.
If you are not satisfied, tell them and they'll do something about it.
My battery blew out after 1.5 years and they sent me a new one. No questions asked.

Unfortunately when they break, they are expensive to fix. This is the last Mac I'm buying (but I want an Ipad badly....)

I've owned a few Macs and they are great machines, but sometimes I wince over the pricing. I recently purchased a PC laptop with an i5 processor, 16" display, 6GB RAM, 512MB dedicated video, and a 500GB HD at a much lower cost than even the basic MacBook price. Win7 is OK for me, but I have to say Snow Leopard is like getting a BBS shave in one pass - smooth, and a lot less irritating. Have my eyes on a MacBook Pro withiun the next two months.

I think their new models have recently hit the store....I can report back later today as I will be making a pilgrimage to the apple temple.

thanks all. yeah I'm not new to mac or windows. My cheap PC gets the job done for freelance work and I really don't need one but My current mac is about 8 years old, the optical drive stopped working somewhere on my trip around the world and now it makes funky noises not to mention it only has half a gig of ram.

I really just need to get one to keep myself up to date with the software for work. I have OSX 10.2 or something like that. I might just get a cheap mac mini or something and sell the ipod that comes with it.

After having two windows machines die on me in the last 5 years, with multiple issues in between - viruses, hardware failures, the constant need to update this or that. I finally took the plunge and coughed up the cash for a MacBook Pro. I have not had a single regret in the month and a half that I've owned it. In addition, before my last computer died my wife purchased a windows 7 machine...I loath that operating system. In fact she steals the mac any chance she gets...so (while she won't admit it) I know I'm not the only one.

As for new models the macrumors page is fairly accurate (it says there should be about 80 days until an update). You can count on there being a new ipod released after this back to school sale and they will probably update the computer line around then as well. If you need it now, go for it. If you want it now wait a few months and get the newest one available. But the back to school sale is THE time to buy one. I got a discount on the macbook pro, a free ipod touch, and a new printer (also free).

It's a beautiful machine...you won't regret it.

Apple releases its new product runs and OSes in March/ April generally.

Welcome to the light, your life just got easier.

heh, nice, I have already been on board with macs for about 13 years now? Back when photoshop 5 or 6 was out and Apple's top-priority was making reliable computers for creatives as opposed to ipods and iphones. I'm actually typing this on a g4 powerbook from around 2002ish.

the only reason I went to PC was because Apple started updating their OS every 3 months and it would cause nothing but compatibility issues with adobe's software. so it causes this vicious cycle of updating software. I have to stay up to date with adobe's software but in order to do that I have to update apple's OSX, and in order to do that sometimes you have to buy a new computer. Try running Snow leopard on an older mac. the 32-bit / 64-bit
causes all sorts of problems for most programs. but CS5 on a mac is built for 64 bit. so if you try to install it on an older system a lot of errors pop up. and if you go back further, they had power PC mac instead of intel. that caused all sorts of issues.

I was tired of it so I built my PC 4 years ago that still has XP and I can run Adobe CS5 great. But now my mac is stuck on adobe CS2, because not even CS3 will run correctly on this hardware. so now I need to get up to date and do it all over again.

Don;t think that they will introduce new models anytime soon. Usually the MacBook lines are Dec/Jan releases.

Just got my wife a MacBook Pro (using teacher's educational discount). It came with a free 16GB iPod Touch (through rebate). Also, they never checked my University ID. All they needed was a driver's license and a cc #. They even delivered that sucker to my office :001_smile

Woot woot! +1

Don't know if someones posted it but apple only releases updated hardware in June.

The new iCores are already out on both platforms if i'm not mistaken. That technology should last you several years. I myself build my computers under the AMD/ATi platform but if you are looking strictly for an apple computer, you won't regret it if you buy it now as apple doesn't look like they're releasing new tech for atleast 9-12 months.

They just upgraded the Imacs a week or so ago. I have the 27in Imac i5.
had it for a almost a year now and I love it. I was a windows user for 15 years prior and I hope I never have to go back.

Speaking from a hardware perspective, there is no such thing as a "mac computer". They use virtually the same components you will find in any Windows-based PC. In fact, Mac pays a premium to various hardware manufacturers (like Intel) to avoid advertising this fact, such as with an "Intel Inside" sticker on the computers.

To highlight this point, you can install the Mac OS on an Intel-based PC and it will run perfectly fine. I know several people who like the Mac OS but not the Mac price-tag, so they bought Windows-based PCs with better hardware specs for a fraction of the cost and installed the Mac OS to them. Instead of paying $1200+ for a comparable (or lesser) machine, they paid $400-500.

IMO, 9/10ths of the cost of a Mac is brand-name and to cover their advertising budget.

As for wanting to wait for the 'latest model'; sorry, but there is no such thing. A big part of their business platform relies on releasing minor hardware updates (some of which people suspect are intentionally held back) every few months and calling the same product a "new generation", knowing that people will line up around the block to buy it. Look at the iPad. One of the biggest gripes consumers had was that it did not feature a web-cam. Yet when the boys at Mission Repair opened one up to see how it works, what did they find? An internal port, empty and unused, that perfectly fit the Apple iCam. What do you want to bet iPad 2 will come with a cam? ;) [Source]

I’m not trying to dissuade you from buying a Mac. Lots of people love the OS, and that’s just fine. I simply advocate consumer awareness.

Before you buy a computer of any brand, I suggest asking yourself what you need it for. If all you do is surf the web, check email, and maybe write a report or two, than an inexpensive ($200-$300) NetBook might be just perfect for you. I know a couple people who’ve spent over $1200 on their MacBooks, and the things are basically just FaceBook machines. Heh ;)

Happy shopping!
