Maas Polish & My First Cleaning Plan

Well, I picked up a couple ruff looking razors cheap to practice my cleaning/polishinig routine and they're on their way. I couldn't find any Maas polish anywhere! Tried 2 Walmarts, 2 Lowes, a Walgreens and even a K-Mart. It seems to be the go-to polish for razors so, I ordered it from their website along with their some jewelry cleaner for wife to try.

I ordered the 1.15 lb can of creme, not the liquid polish. Is this what is generally used by most?

For my first cleaning, here is my plan:

1. Bring water to boil and remove from heat. Add baking soda and soak soak in aluminum foil lined bowl. ??? does it matter which side of the foil is facing up?

2. Spray with scubbing bubbles, let sit, then use wifes, umm I mean an old toothbrush to scrub.

3. Rinse and dry

4. Apply Maas Creme Polish.

Any suggestions?????? BTW, can't swing an ultra sonic cleaner right now.

What razors are you trying to clean? You know the baking soda and hot water treatment only works for silver plated razors. If they aren't silver then start with your step #2 and you'll be fine.

If you have an Ace hardware near, they carry Maas. +1 on the silver razor - the baking soda trick does little, if anything, for nickel. Other than that, sounds good. Maas is a nice mild polish.

One is a Flare Tip and the other a Super Speed. My undestanding is they are nickel plated. How common are silver razors???

Here's a place near you that should sell it. I get mine at Ace.

Sweet! Thanks for taking the time to look that up. I didn't think about ACE hardware. That's a little out of the way but I have family in Falmouth. I have a feeling the 1 lbs can is going to last a good while though!!!!! Or, I could just jump in to major razor cleaning and burn through it!!!!!

I have family in Kentucky too (dad was born there), but it's really far from PA, which is probably why I've never met them.

Not all ACE stores stock it (mine around here do not). And BTW, I don't thing MAAS is that mild. Fairly aggressive in fact.

I bought mine on eBay, but he's got some coming (yes, the paste, not the liquid. But Wait!).

For your cleaning plan, it needs adjusting.

Step 2 should be step 1 (unless you do a soak in warm water first, which I suggest- a half hour, maybe with a little dish soap, then go to the Scrubbing Bubbles and wife's... I mean used tooth brush (seriously, you were kidding about using hers I hope)- This is regardless of the razors finish, and should take care of crust, crud, soap scum and the like, as well as sanitize the razor.

Next up, what is the razor's finish? If it is Silver Plated (tell us the era and model if unsure, and we can tell you), the baking soda treatment is the way to go. See my signature for more info, or check BrianDiPalma's pictorial thread on it's use.

Next step? Forget the MAAS! This is for nickel plated razors, and is great for certain things. It is to be avoided on either gold or silver plated razors. If silver, the only thing you'll want after the baking soda treatment (you may need to repeat that one 4-5 times depending on the razor's condition, and I'd let it soak for maybe 10-12 minutes or so for each treatment-either side of the foil should work fine) is MAYBE a light use (sparingly) of a mild silver polish. This only as needed to impart a finishing shine. I did use it under the head of a British New to remove a bit of rust stain that the 'Bubbles didn't get (usually they will handle this well, and they got most of it, just one stubborn area required polish and a tooth pick).

Save the MAAS for cleaning Fat Boys, Super Speeds, anything that is nickel plated. And still begin with a soak and then the Scrubbing Bubbles treatment (you're going to need a dedicated tooth brush :wink2:). And even then, use it sparingly. It is a very strong polish, and can easily get through even the nickel finish Gillette used in the 40's/50's. But it does a great job of say, removing stubborn water spots on silo doors. And getting hard to remove spots from between the knurling. Silver though, is much too soft to be safely attacked with it IMHO, and besides, there are gentler methods that will work. And that's really the point, always use the least amount of abrasiveness/harshness needed to achieve the desired cleaning results, preserving the original finish as best you can.

Happy cleaning!

My Ace Hardware's in Milwaukee don't carry Maas, so I don't think it's universally stocked. One place that stocks Maas at all locations is Crate and Barrel. Just check the silverware section. It's in a C&B box, but is a tube of Maas inside!

Okay, my above reply was started before several posts here were made.

You say one is a flare tip (which is most often one type of Super Speed, exception being a rare 1010's Aristocrat in Silver :001_tt1:) and the other is a (I presume another type of) Super Speed.

Yes, no Super Speeds were silver plated, so your MAAS (which should last a LOOONG time, I got an 8 oz tube and it's still near full) is fine. Forget the baking soda/foil for now, come back to it when you buy an Old Type or other that is silver plated.
