Got this in the mail as a restoration project. The purpleheart, epoxy finish and Nickel Silver pins were upon request of the owner. I popped the grain a bit on the purpleheart by scorching it a bit before finishing.

I don't know if I've seen purpleheart look quite so good. May I ask what you mean by 'scotching it'?

I believe he meant "scorching".

Scotching is something a lot of craftsmen do after a restore and it involves some nice music and an old bottle of scottish pride.
