When it comes to using different lubricants other than just water, what have you tried and the results following. I myself like adding a couple drops of dish soap when trying to push a stone to its limits. If you have used oils, what kinds and what worked best for you?

I am a media dependent dependant... Water on the coticule, lather on the barber hone (just for for fun), oil on the arkansas, and soap on lapping film.

Depends on the stone.

Oil (Think it's a synthetic though) on oilstones, Water on dmt's. Water or slurry on everything else. Tried lather once or twice on a few stones, didn't make an appreciable difference vs water.

Usually just water, but lately I have been adding a squirt of dish soap at the end and have noticed good things.

Water on coticule, Japanese water stone, and Bavarian slate.
Honing oil on Arkansas, lily white, barber's hones that do not call for lather.

Beyond this, I've heard a lot of good things about using dolphin's milk on coticules. Milk fat, you know...
