Lost Gentlemanly Rituals

What other type of Gentlemanly rituals do you guys have that most modern men don't bother with OTHER than wetshaving? You know, something that if you have time, it's nice to do.

Reading a printed newspaper, writing letters and cards with a fountain pen, polishing my shoes and boots- I am sure that there are others.

Ahhh. The virtues of writing with a fountain pen...I must admit, I got many of those (nice ones too) and I use them all.

And of course, shoe polishing...I do that like a ritual. it is therapeutic and goes very well with a BBS shave.

most can't tie a bowtie and use that clip-on $hite instead

+1 on the bow tie Desdinova...Can't stand this "junk" (other colorful metaphors spring to mind that I can't say here) that you see at department stores, like clip-ons...Yuuukkk!!:thumbdown:mad1:. I have a hard time finding classic, good quality silk, do-it-yourself bow ties and that actually look nice (NO modern or trendy patterns, thank you)

I do like to read A LOT, but for the most part I can't stand newspapers because to me, it's hard to find one that is actually reporting factual news and not just spewing politics (from either side of the isle) It is a shame that newspapers and journalism in general today has become more about furthering political agendas than reporting news (my opinion of course). There is nothing more relaxing to me than to sit with my morning coffee on Sunday, reading before I go to church with my wife and kids.

There have been some pretty epic threads on this very topic if you're interested...a quick search should turn them up. :001_smile

+1 on all of the above, I eat with my knife and fork in the continental style. When I look around me in restaurants I am totally amazed at the lack of table manners, elbows on the table not using napkins, forks used as shovels etc. I open doors for all women and will offer my seat to a lady when the circumstance arises.

Reading paper copies yes. Shinning boots. I know 2 different tie knots. I also use a fountain pen. I cook pretty much anything from scratch. Recently, made my own mustard - MUSTARDPOWER!, I pickled my own Sauherkrut, my own kimchi, I'm doing beetroots this week-end. I also make my own tortillas, pasta and never use any kind of frozen meat/veggies. I try to buy organic where I can, freerange as a minimum for the meat.

I go to the Farmer's market at least once a month. I brew my own beer, I make my own wine when place allow (not at the moment but as soon as I have enough room, it will restart). Both preservative free of course.

Can't think of anything else for now.

The art of conversation, with email and texting people have forgot how to actually sit down and talk with someone face to face.

I like to take the time to give my shoes a good shine periodically using black wax and a brush and cloth to buff them.

I iron dress shirts, but also sometimes take them to the cleaners so I don't have to. Even no-wrinkle shirts look better ironed. It's certainly not a ritual, but I made stainles steel collar stays for my shirts. Plastic ones don't survive the laundry if I forget to take them out, and they break.

I still cut the lawn. It's becoming a lost ritual in my neighborhood as more and more people hire a service to do it. Our yards aren't that big. Some people with teenage sons even have a service cut the lawn. I guarantee that my son WILL cut the lawn when he's a teenager in two years.

Speaking of sons, thet reminds me of other rituals. I've taught my son how to fish, shoot a .22 rifle accurately and responsibly, throw a curveball, use power and hand tools, and why Swiss army knives are so cool. All stuff that boys used to learn from their Dad as a rite of passage, but now even a lot of the Dads don't know.

Randy,
That's a BIG one; Table manners. Man, now there's a serious one where people fail miserably. You walk into a restaurant and see this guy/gal eating with strange contortions of the hands and fingers and you can't tell whether the fork is a utensil or an extension of their digits. And then, after doing whatever it is that they do to their food, they put the knife down, switch hands and use the fork to shovel the garbage in their mouth.

I am sorry for being this graphic, but there is nothing more disturbing (manner wise, I mean...although I am sure someone here will come up with something here that will get me going ) than a lack of proper table manners. This is fundamental social skills. Kids don't learn that anymore these days...it's not a national priority. The US, one of the strongest economic forces capable of shaping geopolitical landscapes, cannot get this right??? I am an American, but do not subscribe to this ignorant mindset. We send so-called diplomats across the globe representing the "American" people...Let's get this right people. It's really simple.

Whatever happened to the good old days of raising kids with table manners? I remember being raised with strict manners...we ate properly or we didn't eat. Boy, did we learn quickly. Fork in left hand and knife in right (regardless of whether you're right or left handed).

yeah...I know. I work with educated people with influence, but I am surprised at how often eye-to-eye contact and a down to earth discussion about "normal" stuff is outside the comfort zone for these guys...What gives. Are we becoming automatons ??

I will make it worse...

Tonight, Sauerkraut with lamb sausages and roasted potatoes

Tomorrow, Prawns stuffed tortellini (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=145418), yes, I will post the results and the how-to

Sunday, Cannelloni stuffed with ricotta and spinach baked in tomato sauce with buffalo mozzarella on top.

Somewhere this week: http://www.sbs.com.au/food/foodsafarirecipe/index/id/9307/n/Pasta_and_beans_(pasta_fagioli)

Finally, I will most likely bake some bread with the Cannelloni! Diner is at 7pm every night... Preservative free wine included (red or white)
