What's new

Looks like an Old Type, but not Gillette?

Just got this in from Ebay (mailed from France):

No marking on the razor at all. And the Gillette logo on the felt looks like it was done with a pen, it's bled on the edges. The alignment pin holes aren't circles, but are a bit flat on the top and bottom of the hole. I like finding these different razors, I just have such a hard time discovering anything about them.

Jim, I'm no help but that's a handsome set, hand-drawn logo and all. Something tells me it's a French manufactured razor and somebody seized the day and designed their own Gillette knock-off. Again, great set no matter what it is. :001_cool:

Thanks Bill, I lean in the direction too. If it weren't for the slightly off logo, the case is like any other Gillette. Form fitting, nicely done interior. Solid, well working latch. And Orange. I'm happy with it for sure.

How does it shave?

Don't know, I'll try it tonight. I initially thought it would be just like a Single Ring Old Type, but the head has a slightly flatter profile. Should be interesting!

That's a neat find, Jim. I don't know anything about it, but the case reminds me of this one that Jake sold awhile back. The latches look a little different, but the unique color on the lining reminded me of yours.

Oh yes! Good work Brian, I think you solved this one. Check out the alignment holes in the base plate:

Looks pretty similar. And they must of hand painted the Gillette logo on. Maybe the seller, maybe not. I may send them a email asking about it.

So would I be far off calling it a French Le Coq in counterfeit case?

thanks all!

Wow, more data! Bingo! With that name (Leresche) that John supplied, I found these:

This is definitely a Leresche handle. But the head isn't quite definitive. The alignment pin holes look like a match, but the pins themselves look different and the lack of a marking of any kind I don't know what to make of.

So what they apparently did was take a Le Coq case - like the one Brian found in Jake's post (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showpost.php?p=1970519&postcount=1), penned in the Gillette logo and stuffed an odd Leresche. And you know what?

I shaved with it last night and it was really very nice. It didn't fall apart in my hands (like the flare tip rocket I got from Bulgaria - that's a different story). Got a DFS out of it. I really enjoyed using it.

Why is it I now have two razors I bought out of France that are obviously French made but are completely unmarked and somewhat hard to identify?

I should probably be more selective in who I buy from, but I would miss all this fun. :biggrin1:

It's the oddball ones that are more fun anyway, in my opinion.

Thousands of us have Gillette Old Types. How many have Leresches in hand-drawn Gillette logo Le Coq cases?
