Looks like a Military Service

Would you agree that this razor is a 1917 (or so) Military Service edition? It was "Made in Canada". The razor itself was quite brassed so I had it replated in silver by our friends at Reliable Electroplating & left the case as it was -- which is quite beautiful in its 2-tone quality.

The teeth of the comb are totally straight in spite of the apparent optical distortion in the 2nd photo, and there is no splitting in the handle -- surprisingly none at all.

But what do you think -- is this the Military WWI razor?

I couldn't tell you if it's a military service or not but What i can tell you is that razor is absolutely stunning,I'm very envious :biggrin1:

That sure is a beautiful razor, if the reflection gets to be to much PM me and I'll take it off your hands. In the interests of saving your eye sight of course. :biggrin1:

That's a real beauty, Jake. It's especially nice with no cracks in the handle. You have a new razor.

I don't know if it's a WWI razor or not. I would expect it to have a serial number even if it is a Canadian model.

Are the blade positioning posts as flat as they look in the photo? I would expect them to be more bullet shaped.

Yes, the blade posts are more flat than bullet shaped. And there is a serial # on the top side of the bottom head plate Is 373504. And the razor handle is in perfect shape. Any further thoughts regarding exact model & age?

Hello Jake, nice find!
I believe I have the same model than you, with date code 280868, also made in canada, and I got it with a Gunmetal Shell pattern case (made by Gillette)
I think is very odd, considering those codes should be for razors made around 1905.
Do you think in Canada they used different date codes?

Here are some pictures of my razor.

Compared to older models and a Military J date coded razor

Also a weird second date code stamped backwards and upside down, on top of the Gillette Logo (also don't you think that "Gillette" looks different to other fonts used? I mean it looks like the fonts used in the hot water bottles, but I might be wrong)

The military sets and the pocket sets used the same razor. It's possible your razor and case are a set. The serial numbers on US made razors can generally tell you if the razor is part of a military set. But I have no idea how Canadian serial numbers identify the razor.

The decoration on the box looks more like Art Nouveau or the Craftsman movement than anything associated with the military. The ABC case here looks very similar, so it could be a case of the razor being in the wrong box:

When Gillette stopped using ABC as a supplier, Gillette continued making pocket sets with cases similar to ABC but furnished with ball end Old Type razors instead of the ornate ABC razors. It's very possible that Jake's set is one of those. However I'm less familiar with Canadian sets then those made in the US. What I don't know is if these Canadian razors were made with the rounded blade posts like those found on ABC razors.

Len, can you post a photo of the ABC blade post? Then I'll post a closeup of one from this razor.
