Looking to buy my first real straight

So should I buy a $70 professionally sharpened DOVO? (that's my price range...actually the most I'd spend) Should I look on the bay or here for a better deal and sharpen it myself? I don't mind doing the work myself. I tried the disposable straight and that just sucked. Suggestions? Advice? Deals? Thanks!

IMO you should buy one here or at SRP. We have 2 vendors here maybe more Ambrose and Leighton for sure could find you something very nice and positively shave ready. I would stay away from Dovo's even though I own 5 myself. There are better razors out there. Check out the vender section here or B/S/T.

No, you shouldn't! You don't mind the work only because you don't know what it takes. Depending on the razor, budget between 25min and 25 hours for cleaning it up, then about $100 worth of hones and no less than 50 hours to get it where you can shave with it (and it will sill be not as good as getting somebody experienced's honing).

So my experienece cleaning old knives with rust and chips in them which takes about 1 hour each blade wont help? :(

It'll help, but it's not really the point. You should get a blade that's been made shave ready by an experienced hand so you know what you should be aiming for when you start trying to do it yourself.

oh it will help. if you are good with power tools will take you less, but a razor is ground much thinner and you have to be very careful to not destroy the temper.

as far as honing you'll have to go way beyond the sharpness you're used to. it just takes experience, there's no shortcut if you want to do it yourself. you are also very likely to end up accepting a subpar edge just because you don't know how to get it sharper. not worth in my opinion.

unless you're really good at it, or your time is worth pennies it's much cheaper to buy a finished product.

just look at various restoration threads here and over at straightrazorplace and you'll find some with before/after and what it took to make the difference.

Sweet, thanks guys. I just bought a Jim smith for $30 on here prehoned so I'm excited! Now I have to get a strop. I don't think I'll stop using my red tip for prolonged uses but I think I'll have alot of fun using a str8 when I get the hang of it.
