What's new

Looking for new brush recommendations

I currently have only one brush, a Vulfix VS/1 boar. I am in the market for a moderately priced badger of moderate or better quality. Here are my answers to the "help me pick" sticky:

  1. Current collection: Only the Vulfix VS/1 Pure Bristle
  2. Lathery Leanings: Currently bowl lathering with primarily hard soap and/or cream
  3. What I want from the next brush: Badger badger badger *ahem* Sorry. I'd like a brush with more "volume" in the bristles, meaning a wider head on it. I'd also like a slightly wider knot, I think, but can live with same size there.
  4. Desired aesthetics: I want it to fit into my drip-stand, which is the Vulfix one that I think I've seen a several vendors. Plastic, with a slot cut in the top to set the brush in, bristles down.
  5. Budget: Around $50-$60 or so. Doesn't have to be top-of-the-line, obviously.
  6. Already interested in: Nothing really. There's so much out there that I'm practically paralyzed with the possibilities, which is why I'm looking for some guidance

I don't expect that this will be my last brush, but it'll be a good while before I can add to this collection, since I just don't have the space for it. Soaps and AS are easier for me to store. :D

Hivemind: Activate! Seriously, though, comments/suggestions would be appreciated

Hmmm...I have the exact same qualifications for my next brush...and will be interested in the answer...thanks for making it easier for me.

Since you said you bowl lather I would recommend the pure badger from Vintage Blades. It's not super dense like other Rooney's but works great for hard soaps and creams also. It's a little to prickly for face lathering but it's fine if you build your lather in a bowl first.

I also love this brush for use with both Williams and VDH soaps (and thus expect it to work well with MWF and Tabac), but I don't consider it too prickly for face lathering. Even though I lather up in a bowl, I follow that with face lathering for at least two minutes, making a point to scrub my face well with the bristle points. And I have pretty tender skin, so much so that before coming back to DE, I could only shave every other day. However, as always, YMMV. Some may find the Rooney 3/1 in Super (reportedly denser knot and softer tips) better suited to their needs/desires.
