Looking for input on a new brush

Setting your budget at $70ish allows you access to a great deal of brushes, I will assume you are looking for a badger. Simpson (a much loved brand here) makes a nice selection in that price range. I have a Duke 1 and highly recommend it. you can also get the Case, Wee Scot, and a few others from Simpson. There are also a great deal of Edwin Jagger brushes in that range as well as Vulfix, and AoS brushes. What you will find is that at some point you will narrow it down to 3 or 4 brushes and you just need to get one. You will always find praise for the common 4 or 5 brushes on the market and no one is better than another and most likely not all that different. Although people will often discuss the minutia of various brushes a decent brush from a reputable maker will suit you well. The more important questions are, do you face/bowl/hand lather? do you want a big knot or a smaller knot? scritch or soft hair? soap or cream?

For what its worth I would not get an AoS, I find there stuff a bit overpriced, you may want to look at something like a Simpson, being one of the oldest brush makers in the world I trust that they know what they are doing at this point.

I would say to get an Omega pro 49 and a whipped dog silvertip in about 22-24mm. You should be able to get both for under $50 total, and have 2 great examples of boar and badger to work with. The WD 22mm is the brush I'll always have around.

If you could go a few dollars more (less than $10), I would strongly recommend the Simpsons Colonel X2L. An excellent brush.

Alternatively, a TGN 2-band Finest, at about 23 mm width and no more than 48 loft.

I second the Simpson Colonel X2L, a great best badger brush, and big step up from the B&B Essential Omega Boar. I started with the B&B boar, and while it is good, the Simpson is in another league.

I find the Simpson best for face lathering with soaps. While you can bowl lather with it, it seems to bloom sooo much, it gets rather large with loads of lather everywhere. Not a bad thing, but not as controllable as face lathering, either with a stick, or soap. Should be avail for about $65 delivered in the US.

This is is very similar to what I did. I bought a WD silvertip 24mm, and a B&B essential boar. Total cost was about $55, but only because I got the more expensive firehouse pottery handle on the WD. The essential came today, and is a great brush, that will only get better as it breaks in. The WD should arrive tomorrow, so I can't comment on it just yet.

This is a good plan and you will still have some money left for something else.

There may be a brush or two on offer during the upcoming St Sue Auction ...
