What's new

looking for great a vintage electric shaver

Somtimes I just want to grab a quick shave with out the fuss ( althought it's more pleaseing ) of a wet shave .
What about a nice vintage Remington just a once in a while shave . something from the seventies ?

thanks

Electrics have never agreed with my face, but I have to believe modern electric razors are far more advanced than the old models. I could be way off base on this--but I have a hunch you are better off with one of the newer models.

I would bet the same, newer is probably better here. There are two types: foil and the spinning heads of the Norelco styles. I never really liked the foil but the Norelco was pretty good. I switched from that to DE because it always seemed to leave one patch or another unshaved, and never the same patch twice.

Hi Dean , thanks for the reply . I simply want the cheapest way to go and something good and maybe interesting off ebay sometimes the old things can work very well . it doesn't have to be a great one .

Understood. You may have some luck on the Bay. Not sure they refer to electrics as "vintage", though.

Sorry I can't be of more help with your original question, but here are some alternatives:

Unless you get irritation with carts, or you want to shave on the go, a fusion power might work for you (they did for me). Effortless and fast.

Also this travel electric gets good reviews and is very inexpensive:

Good luck!

i have been using electrics since the 70's (and still do) and can offer a little info.

the current generation shaves much better than those from 40 years ago. i easily get a DFS or better shave with an electric in less time than with wetshaving, and with never any weepers or irritation. but wetshaving is more fun and more satisfying.

the cutting mechanism in electrics dulls over time and needs replacement, usually every year or two depending on how much it is used. that may be problematic with a 70's vintage.

a bigger problem is the battery. most electrics that are rechargeable won't operate plugged into an outlet unless the battery is functional. and when the battery dies, it either cannot be replaced or can only be replaced at an expense close to the cost of a new shaver.

rebates on electrics happen during the year, usually around christmas and father's day. last year it was possible to get one from Best Buy for close to nothing.

most men get better results from the foil type shavers such as braun and panasonic. i like the norelco better, but it is a close call and a YMMV thing.

virtually all new electrics have a 30 to 90 day satisfaction guarantee with full refund if you don't like it.

my advice would be to stick with the current generation.

+1 on the Braun. When my RAD kicked in, it extended to the various shaving systems I remembered from childhood, including electrics. Not wanting to spend a lot on something I knew I wouldn't use much, I picked up two travel electrics at Wal-Mart: that Braun and a comparable Norelco. Both were about $15. They both work well enough, but I've decided I like the foil-type (Braun) better.

Thanks all for the advice

I may look into a G/fusion Do you have to prep the beard much? to use one. I have a tuff beard and I go sometimes a day or two with out a shave.

For the last 6 months or so using a Fusion, I prepped the same way I prep now for DE shaving. Before that, I prepped pretty well, I think, for a Fusion user. I shaved in the shower so my face was certainly wet and I used pre-shave oil. I would try to use good products like AOS cream. But I would also sometimes use Gillette Fusion Proglide Clear Gel or Shick Hydro. Worked pretty well, but I'd never go back to that after AdP, Cella, RazoRock, etc.

If you are looking to skip prep, then I don't know how to advise you. Maybe electric is the way to go for you, if your skin can handle it. Mine can't.

When I was 12 or 13, my dad gave me 1. His Fatboy 2. His Old spice mug soap and brush 3. A Schick injector 4. a can of Foamy and 5. a Schick electric from the 40's. The Schick tore my face to ribbons, so I have been a wetshaver ever since..almost 50 years now. My father, from that time until he passed, used a Remington Selectro 300.

In my recent quest for all the vintage gear that we all read about, and after collecting over 40 razors and restoring some 30 vintage brushes, I suddenly had a yen to own a Remington like my fathers. I found one on Ebay,in mint condition with case, but the blades were shot. It took me 3 months to find a set of replacement blades, and I finally did. I have so far shaved with this contraption a total of ONE TIME. It was okay, didn't tear up my face so bad, got so-so close, but I had great memories of my dad. Now the razor sits with my other cased collectible razor and I tell my buddies...."This is just like my dad's." That, sir, is about as good as it gets.

Go to a local Estate sale I can bet you with 90% certainty you will find a good old electric for $4.00 or less.

Actually, I myself liked the foil better. It is made in platinum and very smooth, shielding you from the moving blade.
I had a great Braun that my grand-father gave my dad and I inherited when I started to shave.
Sadly it burned down at some point.
Anyway, I only have daughters, so the heirloom would not have been passed down.

There are still foil razor along the same design as the Braun and they even are water-proof, which means you can use them over shaving cream/soap and that is a big bonus.
However, all of them are battery operated now and that is not the same thing.

The Braun I had was Atomic.
Yes. I do typo there. Atomic. As in Powered by the atomic fusion.
