What's new

looking for a vintage razor

Hi All. First thread, so please excuse me if I sound like I don't know what I am talking about.

I have had an EJ 89 for about 12 months and love it - the best thing I have bought for years.

Anyway, I now have the bug and would like to look for a vintage razor to supplement it - something a step up that wont break the bank.

Anyone have any suggestions on razor and vendor as there is lots of advice out there and its hard to know who to trust in internet land!!

Cheers
Northwood

Not sure what you mean by a step up, because the EJ89 is one of the best razors of its type ime; but if you fancy a change, and maybe something a bit more aggressive, then a Gillette New might be worth a look, and won't break the bank. Or perhaps a Slim Adjustable -- get a user grade one and have it replated later if you really like it. Can't beat the B&B BST section as a place to buy.

Local antique malls are always a good place to find really nice stuff at rock bottom prices. Ebay is also good but you will pay a bit of a premium here. The BST section of this forum has some great stuff as well. Do some research and pick a few razors you may like then you will better know what to look for. If it does not matter (which it does not to me personally) get what ever you find that looks shiny and nice.

Dave

+1 on the razor recommendations, with a super adjustable thrown in, too. Also, Krona Kruiser sells some of these replated on occasion, so keep an eye on his listings in the hobbyist section, too.

I agree that a NEW would probably be a good fit if you want a "step up".

I had the same thoughts as you and bought a couple of vintage razors. I eventually realised I liked my EJ a lot better and returned to it. The NEW was a great razor but I just wasn't using it enough.

The only vintage razor I have kept is my Tech.

The Super Speed Flare tip is a great Starter Razor... The 1904 Merkur Classic Open Comb is also a good razor to start with.

I like to check out antique stores and malls for razors. Found a Shick Krona for $14 at one. I get a great shave out of it. Also found a Gillette Red Tip and a Travel Ball Tech at another store. Probably overpaid, but both give great shaves. I would recommend checking eBay on your smart phone when you find one, just to make sure the price is fair. To me, it's the thrill of the hunt (and a tight budget). I'd rather search shops than buy online.
