What's new

Looking for a sharper DE blade.

I have been using both Black 7s and Feathers for a year and a half. I'm looking for something sharper than those other than a SE blade which I also use. Thanks all!

Unless you want to go to a straight razor or one of the Feather replaceable blade straights, I could only recommend a Feather Pro or Super Pro in a Cobra Classic razor.

None of them would be a DE razor.

What are you looking for - less drag, closer shave, less irritation? Consensus seems to be that Feather is about as sharp as you can get so it may be time to look at the rest of your regimen. More aggressive razor and/or less dense soap/cream may be places to start. Sharpest combo I've found so far is a Feather in an R41.

I've read that KIA blades are as sharp as Feathers.

but I've never experienced anything myself that comes close.

Voskhods and Gillette Platinums are sharp, and provide great shaves for me.

Thank you all for your replies. After I posted this thread the thought of switching to a more aggressive razor than another blade popped in my head. I want a closer shave with a DE as I get with a SE is all.

@zygalski I am by no means a troll. I have been on B&B for a year and a half. No reason for me to do useless junk.

I've read that the Above the Tie Kronos may get you about as close as you are going to get to a Cobra Classic as any DE razor will get. I haven't tried the Cobra yet but I want to. I have the ATT Kronos razor and get incredibly close shaves with it. The closest I've ever gotten in fact. I use the H plate and R plates with it. Mostly the H plate. It's expensive but I believe it's about the best DE razor made.

I was just going to suggest a slant or maybe an adjustable. Seems you might be getting bored with your daily tool and you are looking for something to break up the monotony. I have since wondered into the SE realm. It is scratching that itch for me. Let me know if you want to try one out. (PIF not a sales pitch)

The Feather is overrated.
Crucify me now, but it is NOT the sharpest blade out there.
I will admit that KAI is incredibly sharp, at least equal to the Feather.

The sharpest blade in my arsenal is the PS Super Iridium.
I have compared it side by side to the Feather. PSI wins.
Boom. Bring on the hate.

BTW, always nice to see another NC resident on B&B.

If the Polsilver is sharper than the Feathers, it is also more forgiving. Even though I just wrote those words, I really have no idea what that means. The Polsilver is one of my favorites. No Nicks; No Cuts; No Weepers. The Feathers? My face after a Feathers shave looks like a failed suicide attempt. How could the Polsilver be sharper?

Okay, I think Feather blades are at the top as far as feeling sharp. Maybe there are other blades at the top as good or better, I can't argue. But if you can't get a close shave with a Feather, my advice is look at other variables, not the razor blade.

I don't have an answer. For what it's worth I've seen plenty of similar comments, and pick any blade and there will be a division of opinion. I found Feather blades to be smooth, and so have others, but still others find the blade to be harsh. I think to large degree you just have to stop asking why and accept things as they are in this case, but come back and try the Feather blades in a year.

All I know is that Super Iridium blades give me a closer and longer-lasting shave than Feathers. Admittedly, the difference is very, very small. Even so, if it shaves closer, doesn't that mean it is sharper? Perhaps not, but I still like the PSI better.

I personally don't understand the chase after the sharpest blade. I prefer a convenient, smooth blade, that will give me a pleasant shave. 99% of blades are sharp enough, they just have other different disadvantages.

I too think all blades are sharp, but the difference is different blades feel sharper than others. For me, I don't want to feel resistance; I want the feel of a knife through hot butter, to use a cliché. Others probably have different reasons, but that is all there is to it for me. I can get a close comfortable shave with any of the blades I have used so far, but there's just that extra element of the feel.

I have tried Feather and more recently Kai blades (I think Kai is what you meant) and I can say without a doubt, the Feather is sharper. But the Kai is also a bit more forgiving to the skin. Feather is just amazing if I have a few days of stubble...it just slices through it with zero drag.
