Looking for a pipe

Hello guys,
Im looking for a pipe ( I usually do my buisness with cigars international) and some help. I have dabbled with cheap pipes over the years hear and there. I know NOTHING about them other than I would stuff the bowl lightly and light it up. Nsome things I think I'm looking for are
easy
cheap($40 max) ( being that I'm still in dabble mode)

Maybe you could make some suggestions on other things a dabbler should look for as well as something that would fit (hopefully from cigar international stock)

As far as tobacco after reading some brown leaf posts I am interested in Escudo. If I could get some feedback on that. Im looking for a mellow (easy) aromatic tobacco.

Thanks for your help
Brian

I'm a casual pipe smoker and by no means an expert on them but I have a Baraccini pipe I really like and would recommend. It smoked great once I broke it in.

I just looked at pipesandcigars.com and they're all $40 and under there.

I'd visit local antique shops. They often have old pipes of very respectable makers:

Dunhill
Peterson
Savinelli
Butz-Choquin

and a host of others.

Clean off the bit with alcohol, clean out excess carbon from the bowl with a reamer, use alcohol on a pipe cleaner to clean out the passages.

You can smoke a lot cheaper "used", than "new". There are some websites that sell vintage pipes. They're pricier than the antique shops, but still cheaper than what I see at Cigars International.

Not to step on any toes, but I would avoid uncleaned estates like the plague, you may luck out but more often than not you will find a whole host of problems that you didn't bargain on. Just like no one here would suggest I head off to the local thrift-shop to buy my first straight razor.

That said, there are lots of excellent pipes to be had for less than fourty bucks. If you are set on purchasing something new, I would recommend the venerable Dr. Grabow. Although people often seem to look down upon them, I suspect this is due to snobbery rather than smoking quality. Certainly, they are not going to sport amazing straight-grain and glassy-smooth finishes; but they are drilled well and the briar is just fine (in fact, I've got an Omega in my rotation that outsmokes a few high-grades).
Another good starter smoker is anything from the Missouri Meerschaum corn-cob lineup. They may not look pretty, but they do smoke very well.

Mondays and Thursdays between 4:00-5:00 SmokingPipes.com updates their website, and regularly has professionally restored estate pipes in the $35-45 dollar range. I bought a $35 Savinelli for someone and it was excellent. I kind of wanted to keep it for myself after I saw it.

Are the restored pipes from smokingpipes.com smoke ready? I assume the estate pipes are used so I'm curious on what kind of overhaul they give the pipes? They are sanitary.....right???

The pipes from smoking pipes are ready to go out of the box. The bowls are reamed down to the wood, and the bits are sanitized, buffed and polished.

Well, after reading that, I will certainly find time next monday to visit SmokingPipes.com and see what they have. Thank you for the post.

I vote cob for your first one or two. I have nicer pipes and still tend to reach for them more often then anything else.

This is excellent advice, I was going to post the same thing

I recommend grabbing a Missouri Meerschaum corn cob, even if you do go with a fancier pipe... you can pick one up for less than $10, they smoke great, and it's a great learning pipe- you can beat the tar out of it while honing your smoking technique and if you wreck it, no big loss. It's like learning to drive. Of course you want your first car to be a 1968 Corvette convertible, but it is probably better to learn to drive on that 1998 Taurus.

I appreciate the opinions! I pulled the trigger today and purchased a "yellow bold" standard pipe with a tin of Escudo. Are there any recommendations regarding the disc that escudo comes in? I've only packed "regular" loose tobacco.

Just take a couple coins and rub them between the palms of your hands and fill the pipe like normal. There are other ways to smoke them but in the beginning I'd just rub them out.

I did a D-U-M-B thing! I googled yellow bole after the purchase and found badddddddd reviews regarding burning very hottttttt! Called cigar international cancelled the yellow bowl and then went on smokingpipes.com (as suggested by my enabling friends here on B&B) and purchased a Genoa supreme smooth Zulu. The pipe and Escudo are on the way!
