Looking for a new splash

I figure with the summer heat approaching I figure I need more of a cooling after shave splash. I am not looking for something that is overly mentholly that will freeze my face off, but something cool and refreshing. I am pretty much a bay rum guy, but I am interested in woody and citrusy scents as well.

It would be cool if I could pick it up locally, but I am planning on placing as order with one of the many fine vendors I have discovered through B&B, so if it is something I have to order, that is ok.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Try Proraso splash. It's cooling and refreshing. The menthol is not over-powering in my opinion. It's got sort of a woodsy and manly scent. Easy to get through most of the online retailers.

give Alt Innsbruck a look - it is pretty heavy on the menthol but calms down pretty quickly and has a loooong lasting scent, especially if you lay it on heavy (sticks with me 8 hours if I want it to). Speick is great, and the menthol in it doesnt really cool at all as far as I can tell but heals and smooths better than any of my other splashes.

I'll second the Proraso splash as well as Alt Innsbruck - both have fantastic cooling effects. If you have to pick one, sad as it is to say, I'd vote Proraso. It's a better bang for your buck, and doesn't interfere with cologne.

Having said that, Alt Innsbruck smells really, really good. Awesome tobacco base note that lasts all day.

Don't forget Aqua Velva. If it was called Aqua di Somethingorother, all the hipsters would be crazy about it. Citrus, cooling--it's got it all. I like Proraso and Alt Innsbruck a lot, but I think that AV is the best of the three.

I am pretty sure SCS has a cooling aftershave with citrus in it..might wanna check that out though I haven't tried it.

I do have the SCS Blue Menthol splash though which is pretty great. Just recently brought that out again since the weather has been getting warmer. A little goes a long way and it is definitely cooling and surprisingly moisturizing for a splash.

This gentleman provides sound advice. A question, though: which variety? I'm not up to speed on AV, but I know there's "orange" (musk) and "blue" (something about ice).

I was about to ask the same thing. After reading the reviews, at the price it is worth giving it a try.

Keep the suggestions coming.

Don't forget about speick, one of the best aftershaves out there, not overly cooling but a great fresh scent and leaves your face feeling great.

I heartily agree with Nid (Ha! Go figure...) about AV. Its mere ubiquity here in the US means that it's overlooked by many of us as "Dad's Aftershave"...and not in a good way. If it were European and cost $30 a bottle, everyone'd be all over it.:thumbup1:

JP, I think that Nid is referring to the "Ice Blue", which is heavily mentholated, but if you haven't tried either yet the Musk is also great. Great quality, soothing, available just about everywhere and cheap - what more could a guy ask for? As Nid has said before (I paraphrase here...) "With Ice Blue for the summer and Musk for the winter, I could shave for the rest of my life using nothing but AV and be a happy man."

Yes, it is the Ice Blue. About this time of year, I put the Musk aside until fall.

There's also the Sport but, to be honest, I've never tried it.

Almost got some at Target a few minutes ago. It was a plastic bottle, and I believe CVS still has glass. Will pick this up to try, for the price.

Another vote for Alt-Innsbruck. There is a strong menthol note up front but it fades fast in a few minutes.

Though not really cooling, my favorite warm weather splash is Caswell-Massey No. 6. Speaking of which, I need to order another bottle as summer is nearly here.

Head over to Superlather and get samples of all the splashes he sells. That way, you can try stuff like Proraso and Alt-Innsbruck without shelling out a lot of cash. It is fun, too, trying them all out.

Of the Aqua Velvas, The Ice Sport is my favorite.

One not mentioned here that I'm using often is La Toja's splash--I like it a lot.

I picked up some Aqua Velva Ice Blue last night and tried it this morning. I was surprised how much I liked it. I think I am still going to pick up some Proraso splash in my next order of shaving goodies.

My local Target snuck out a glass bottle of the Aqua Velva Ice Blue, so now I have two bottles. I'm considering rebottling the plastic one, slapping an "Aqua di Velvaro" sticker on it, and selling it for $30...

another vote for Proraso. Very nice in the hot, muggy weather of Northern Virginia and I'm pleased that the fragrance lasts as long as it does.

I really enjoy 4711 in hot weather, another is Stephan's Island Lime. There's always Aqua Velva, hard to go wrong with any of those. Master Lilac Vegetol, not to be confused with Pinaud's Lilac Vegetal, is really nice too.
