Looking for a new brush

Hi Everyone,

I've been lurking for a while. Thanks for all the useful info! :thumbup1:

I've been wet shaving for around 2 months. I'm looking for a new brush, because I think it might work a little better than what I'm currently using. Or maybe I don't need a knew one.

I currently have a Vulfix #374 (as best I can tell. It's from around 2001 and it was a gift. It's super badger.) It sheds at least 1-2 hairs every time I use it. I don't think I'm abusing it.

I'm using triple milled soap, and it doesn't load very well. I have to pinch the hairs to get it to load in ~15 seconds instead of > 1 minute. I don't want to pinch the brush. I don't think I should have to, and I find it irritating.

I prefer to bowl lather. Face lathering with my current brush doesn't work very well.

I like the size and the feel of the brush, but it's too floppy.

I'm looking for something that isn't too floppy. Ideally, it'd be soft and firm enough to load/lather triple milled soap. Perhaps glycerin based ones in the future. Who knows? I don't care about 2-band vs 3-band. I'm mainly looking for performance.

I'd like to spend less than $100 including shipping.

Thanks!

A Rooney 3/1 should be in consideration.

This was my first "real" brush after a floppy Vulfix 1000A. It is still my go-to brush. Rooney 3/1 in Super.

I like it so much, I just dropped a bunch of coin on a 3/1 in Finest from ClassicShaving.com. :w00t:

With a $100 limit, you're sure to get a ton of other good recommendations. Honestly, you probably won't go too wrong with anything that people are about to suggest. Besides, anything you don't like can usually be unloaded on the BST fairly easily.

Why spend a lot of money buying a new brush? If the original brush did not cost you anything and you like the handle, get a TGN Finest, short loft badger and replace the original knot. If it is a 22mm knot it will be about $25 dollars, plus some epoxy and a little labor.

If you take into consideration Vie-Long go for 2 band. 3 band or silvertip could be a bit floppy listening to what you are looking for. I like 16728 from Vie-Long! :thumbup1:

I was thinking about the Rooney 3/1, this might be the deciding factor to get it.

That's an interesting idea about putting a new knot in the handle. I think I'll want to have two brushes though.

Thanks everyone

Omega boar 31064 keeps getting rave reviews.

Any of the Omega boars would do. Boars work better with a triple milled soap. There are badgers that will work with a triple milled soap but those would be the ones with the small tight knots in silver tip IMHO.
