What's new

looking for a firm brush

hello all,

my first brush is starting to malt every-time I use it. It's only a cheap one about 5GBP. I want to put it into a state of "semi-retirement" to use as my travel brush as I'm not to bothered if it gets lost damaged.

From looking at past threads I have seen that most of you want to avoid "scritchy" brushes. however, I think that sounds like my ideal brush!

I'm quite heavy handed and being of a middle eastern background my stubble is hard and coarse. I like to face lather but do occasionally bowl lather.

There are no shops near me (Manchester, UK) with a big enough range of brushes for me to have a look/play so whatever I order off the internet is what I would be stuck with.

In terms of budget I don't want to go too far over the 100 GBP mark.

I will appreciate any of your comments/feedback/suggestions for my new brush! PS I don't want vintage.

I'll put a plug in for the Semogue 620. It's a boar brush with a shorter loft, great backbone and nice and scrubby. It's a perfect size for face lathering. Being boar, it's quite a bit cheaper ($22 on WCS) than a comparable badger brush, which is a nice bonus. There's a moderate break-in period (~20 shaves or so) before it hits its stride, after which it is just awesome.

Sounds like you need a good boar or synthetic brush with a bit of scratch to it.
Check out the review section and also check out some site sponsors and see what they sell.
I know one brand to avoid are Kent, wonderfully soft on the face but not stiff enough for you I venture.
Good luck in your search.

Get any Semogue Boar Bristle brush , made with White Best 75% tops, such as the 620. On the other hand if you are looking for very good backbone and soft tips go with Semogue 1470 and 610 ( White Best 90% tops )

The B&B essential brush is, well quite a decent brush. £20 from WCS and delivery is a round a week. Breaks in in around two weeks and works superbly.

If you are heavy handed and like scritch, get something in pure badger. Simpson makes some good ones below your price range. My recommendation would be to get a Shavemac D01 2 band with a little shorter loft. You will have a strong brush (backbone) with firm but soft tips. Example, 24x46-48mm D01 2 band would meet your needs and save you a lot of looking. High quality.....
Good luck. I learned the hard way FWIW.

Thanks to all your advice, I've gone for the Semogue 830, a brand I never heard of before. As it was so reasonably priced I also purchased a drip stand (can have a new brush without a stand), 1kg Vitos extra super and prorasso shave cut healing gel (for left handed straight razor action).

Can't wait to try the soap and brush, hope I never have to use the cut gel!

I have that brush and like it a lot. It works well with either soaps or creams.

Enjoy, you made a wise choice!

Results are in! I got the 830 as posted above. quite happy with it. I like the chunky handle which I think it better than a round one as I can grip it better. In therms of the "scritch factor" I can feel it has allot more backbone than my last brush but I would have preferred more scirtch. I do really like it overall though and it's a big improvement on my last brush.
