Looking for a brush upgrade

Well, I've been in the mood to upgrade my setup for a while now. Stared out by replacing my bowl with a Georgetown scuttle, then I bought a Mergress a few months back when they were in stock, and now I'm looking to upgrade my brush.

I currently use an EJ Best Badger medium and bowl lather.

At the moment I have been using soaps exclusively and as such, I'm thinking of getting a brush that is more suited to them for some change of pace. You know, variety...the spice of life and the fact is I feel it is time to try a new brush.:closedeye

I have my eye on a Rooney 2/1 or 3/1 in super silvertip. I'm looking to try a silvertip brush this round, for around ~$100, any other recommendations to consider? I want to feel the difference in best badger and the top grade hair for myself.

A Rooney Super brush would be an excellent choice -- nice backbone with soft tips. You can also check out Savile Row brushes at QEDUSA.com. They are also very nice and an excellent value.

If you are minded to go for a Rooney, the 3/1 will be a better bet than the 2/1. The shorter loft is better suited to soaps.

Any particular SR to look at?

I'm diggin the 3722 and the 3118. Though the 3318 doesn't look bad either.

So I am down to the SR 3318 and Rooney 3/1 for now. Though that might change, still have some reading to do.

You can't go wrong with a Rooney, Simpsons, Shavemac...

Just find the handle shape and hair type that you want and go for it! Treat yourself.

So, I am still dragging my feet on deciding which brush I want. I've begun to face lather lately in an attempt to speed up my routine. So how does that change what I am looking for?

Are the SR 3318 and Rooney 3/1 in silvertip still good choices? How about the Ehsan that was brought up?

I started off like you with an EJ brush early on (this followed a pure badger Vulfix). While these were both fine brushes, they are both on the thin and floppy side - best with creams. Next I moved up to a Shavemac which was much denser but cost twice as much as the Vulfix or EJ and, as they say, you get what you pay for. I found the Shavemac to be dense and versatile with a lightbulb shape but more backbone that the EJ or Vulfix - good for both soaps and creams, face or bowel lathering. Next I moved on to a Rooney style 3 size 1 in silvertip. Comfortable handle, nice short but dense loft - lots of backbone and great for soaps, especially face lathering. I still rotate among all of my brushes, and I bought a couple of boars (Omega, a small Vulfix, and two Semogues) to round things out. Each brush is a somewhat different experience but all good. If you want to experience the variety of brush experiences, you should try a Shavemac or a Rooney (or a Simpson which I suspect are very similar to Rooney). It was worth the $. Good luck.

The Ehsan that you mentioned is the Simpson Colonel in two-band super. The Simpson Colonel X2L I mentioned is in best badger, and cost about $50 less, I believe. The best badger is very nice; soft with great backbone.

A Savile Row silvertip is my suggestion for your next step in brushes. My own progression was from a Tweezerman, to a C&E BBB, to a Savile Row 3124. I have continued to buy brushes from various manufactures since then but consider my SR as the standard I gauge all others by. Its a tough decision and I'm sure you will be pleased with any of the brushes that have been recommended, but for softness of tips with a back bone to handle any product I think the SR would be your best choice for your next brush.

Hey, your going to end up owning the rest at sometime anyway. Best of Luck.
