Long Time DE Shaver Needs New Blades - Sharp and Smooth

To summarize, here is what I have on order. Looking to move away from Russian-made blades in case that wasn't 100% clear before (it should have been).

  • Bolzano
  • Derby Premium
  • Bic Chrome Platinum
  • Personna Platinum
  • Kai
  • Personna Med Prep
  • Tatra Platinum
  • Wilkinson Germany
This is already more blades than I wanted to mess with so unless I hate all of them I'm going to stop here.

Whatever I like best will likely split time 50/50 with Feathers. I have used Feathers before but that was years ago.

So that is what MIR means. Sorry, sometimes I am slow. That leaves Permasharp out (I didn't know where they were made until moments ago).

Sharp and Smooth

- NOT MIR.
- I prefer sharp, but smooth blades.
- Not interested in weird uncoated blades, blades that are not sharp enough, or blades that supposedly get through X number of shaves.
- I'm not looking for NOS or HTF or OOP blades either.
- I'm looking for blades that will be available for awhile, that are consistent, where I can purchase 50-100 at a time.
...

The only suggestion I have is Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum (Blacks), made in India. As an opinion, you have listed and have been suggested, some blades that are definitely not sharp, by my standards anyway.
I have very limited experience.

Good luck and enjoy your shaves.

Any Platinum by Lord
Silver Star
Dorco Prime
Gillette 7 o'clock Super Platinum
Gillette 365
Wilkinson Sword
Gillette Wilkinson Sword Chinese
Gillette Super Thin Chinese
Tiger SS

I ordered some of those as well with one my orders, just didn't list them.

What DE blades do you like, out of curiosity?

Usually if a blade is not sharp enough for me I can tell during the first pass. If a blade is not working I will simply toss it and PIF the remainder in the box.

Context: I shave every day, with two passes, to achieve excellent shaves with a partial BBS (on the cheeks). Use blades for seven days, new blade every Monday. Blades are never an issue. Always focused on prep and lather excellence. Everything else is secondary.

I use these blades:

Astra SP
Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Stainless
Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum (Blue, out of production)
Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum (Blacks)
Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdge
Super Iridium
Polsilver Super Iridium
Gillette Perma-Sharp
Personna Platinum Chrome
Personna Super+ Platinum
Feather
Gillette Platinum

I hope this helps.

Only ones I would reinforce are Kai and GSP blacks. They are a smooth blade and very sharp on shave 2 and 3. Next up is the Gillette super platinum made in India. Other good options you have on your list. I have used most. I like

I'm not buying any more Russian-made blades, but I have used some of those on your list. The disappointing ones for me were Astra SP. I picked up a 100 pack at one point a few years ago and while I could get through them, the shaves were simply not as comfortable as what I was used to. I do not know how different they are compared to other MIR Gillette blades, but something must be different about them, like the coating or some other manufacturing process.

I will second Northernsoul's list, since it's exactly what I would recommend. German Wilkinsons are great, and are good for far more than one shave. Dorco Primes are very good too, and if you insist on a single use, pretty cheap.

I would add Indian made Gillette Wilkinson Swords. So far great, although I had to dial my Slim back to 3. I would recommend a fairly mild razor with them.

The Gillette 7 O'Clock Blacks (Platinum) blades are excellent, but expensive for single use. I haven't quite used one up yet, still sitting in my Aristocrat at 117 shaves.

Of course, you could also go for the good old straight razor.
... Since we appear to be in the conscientious consumption ball park anyway. ...
Shaving with DE blades is actually a bit wasteful.

I actually did try straights several years back. Good razors reputably honed. However, I never got the hang of them. The learning curve was far too steep for me and I sold all of it off. I'm content with DE.
