Long Lasting Bay Rum

I know this has been asked before but sometimes I find the search returns way too many threads so appologies as I didn't find the answer I seek.

I remember falling in love with the bay rum scent when I was given a Burt Bees shaving mug and soap many many years ago. I never did try their original formulation cologne which I read was reknowned for lasting a long time. I do sometimes use the Burt Bees aftershave balm which I find lasts a reasonable few hours.

Others I have tried, DR Harris and Pashama, don't last an hour.

Has anyone found a Bay Rum cologne that lasts?

I'll be interested in seeing the answers here. I haven't tried many Bay Rums, but I have a guess this is somewhat of a fleeting scent like citrus.

Has anyone tried that Royall Bay Rhum EdT by Brooks Brothers?

I am a Bay Rum Fan and follow threads on the ropic. There are widely varying opinions on favoriotes and preferences on BR splashes that favor spicy (cimmamon, clove, etc) vs. pure(r) bay leaf oil fragrance. You really have to know what bay rums you like and then sample some until you find one or more that you like and lasts. Check out vendors that offer samples. That said, Captain's Choice must be on your list. I'm not sure about UK or European vendors so I defer to the brethren across the pond.

I have sampled just about every bay rum on the market so far and have yet to find one (except Constanza) that I didn't love.

In my experience the spicy bay rums that are heavy on the cinnamon, clove or other perfume oils (Ogallala, Pinaud, etc.) have a just a little bit more longevity that the more pure bay only scents (Dominica, Master, Royall).

The only Bay Rum I have ever come across with amazing longevity and room clearing projection was the discontinued Burt's Bees Bay Rum Cologne. Ogallala's Bay Rum Sandalwood is pretty decent on longevity but it's mostly a skin scent after an hour or so.

Royall Bay Rhum is great juice, more pure bay than spicy but no more longevity than Masters or Dominica to my nose.

As always YMMV.

Count me among the bay rum fans. I used Royall's for years, then discovered Meehan's. Captain's Choice gets lots of love around here, and I'd like to give it a try, but with my chronic product AD over the past year or so, I need to clear out some of my stock first.

But to answer your question, I've never found a truly long-lasting bay rum. I do tend to go lightly with frags, though.

Yes, leaving that debate aside I'm trying to find out if there is any Bay Rum that lasts like the original Burt Bee's Cologne.

This is what I'm beginning to fear that there is no cologne based BR that actually lasts. I may check out Ogallala. I've had good luck with TOB Sandalwood, I wonder if it is just the sandalwood that lingers in the Ogallala.

Bigelow make a bay rum cologne. I have not tried it but a cologne should have better longevity than a straight aftershave.

I read mixed reviews about that one. One review said they were really disappointed with how long it lasted and it's too expensive for me to ship it here to be wrong.

I have and have tried many. For me, Masters stays the longest with the rest basically short lived IMO. I made a 50ml spray combining Dominica BR, Citrocol (Lime Col fm St. Lucia), and SCS BR which lasted quite well. Both the SCS and Citrocol last quite some time for me and extended the BR also.

Based on my experience, my sense is that no bay rum that is gets its scent solely from bay tree leaf oil is going to have much longevity. That the bay rum with much in the way of legs get them largely from cinnamon and cloves, and perhaps some other spices. Cinnamon, cloves, and other spices are not improper in bay rums. They appear in many traditional bay rum recipes. But they do not have the bay rum smell really like.

Which is fine with me. I use bay rum mainly as an after shave and I do not want it to have much of a lingering smell because it would interfere with whatever scent I am wearing as a scent for the day. If I thought a true bay rum scent would last as a fragrance, I do not know whether I would wear bay rum as a fragrance or not.

Ogallala's "Special Reserve--Double Stength" has great longevity, as I recall. But to my nose it has a whole lot of clove and cinnamon. Ogallala makes great products. But as a scent, I like the aftershaves more than the colognes. YMMV. Great room freshners!

+1

I don't remember if I ever searched-for or found a Bay Rum EDT; IIRC, all I came up with were aftershave- and cologne-strength products. Having said that, my favorite for "legs and longevity" was Pinaud's Bay Rum EDC. I like the aroma and that alcoholic sting; what's more, it's SO inexpensive, that buying a couple of extra bottles -- one for the office, another for home... maybe even one for the car -- won't break the bank (and Pinaud products are ubiquitous, being universally available at most all barber/beauty-salon supply stores).

Smell good!

I have the Burts Bees Bay Rum cologne and I can tell you it lingers forever. I spilled a tad bit in my cabinet and the smell has been there for almost 3 weeks...

When i use AS without a cologne , I tend to put a little on my clothes as well, if I want that scent to linger. With most AS's it works. I get a few more hours of fragrance out of a scent that usually dies down fairly quick. I am currently waiting for a bottle of Aaran aromatics bay citrus edt. that I think will go well with bay rums and give me more longevity out of that wonderful bay scent. As well as enhance my bay rum AS's. I got it from qedusa and am waiting for shipment. It gets nice reviews from basenotes and it sonds like it is a bay rum scent, allthough allbay rums are different they share the same basic notes. I will post how the Aaran bay citrus works for me.

Another note is that for me, the cloves and cinnamon of pinaud bay rum dry down pretty quick leaving a nice aroma afterwards that is very subdued. I also enjoy the all around scent of Masters bay rum. And I pretty much douse myself in these two scents. Face, neck & chest. Initially it smells too much but within 15-20 minutes it becomes a very subtle scent.

I cant get pashana to go away. I find it unbelievably strong. It lingers on me for hours. It gets good reviews from most B&B members but on me I dont think I can stand the smell. Very powerful. It has this powdery overtoneI cant get past and it doesnt seem to change for me. It smells the same to me from the bottle to several hours later, no real change in the scent from the bottle. May look to trade or pif this one.

I found that adding a EO to the Bay Rum works well. I added Sandalwood to Masters and it went from a nice Bay Rum-ish smell to a lingering smell that wasn't quite Sandalwood and wasn't quite Bay Rum. Very pleasant, though.

SCS makes a bay rum EDT--the Bay Rum with a Twist. I have the AS and I can imagine a more long-lasting version would be very nice.

However, I think that Dunhill Edition is what a finely crafted bay rum based scent would be like. It's a little hard to find, but it's a good one.
