What's new

Lite restore & pinning - and a mystery .

This is my second restore I'm starting, and this time I'm keeping the orig. scales because it's a salamander wedge ... or so I thought:

The plan is, sand/grind/polish the blades, clean and polish the scales, re-pin.

Now here's the mystery. On the tang it says, "C. Lutters & Co."
And "47 4/8". There is also a lion logo.

Googling "C. Lutters " returns a few pocket knife results.

On the scales is the word "wedge" with "salamander" on the left and right side in a smaller text size with a small salamander logo. The left side is quite warn and fading. It looks exactly like other ivory colored salamander scales seen on the net. The blade is completely different though, and says nothing about the Salamander Works as I've seen on others. Weird!

I wonder if at some point in history this has been restored and changed scales/blade or if the two manufacturers have some connection. I remember reading that Bismark used to by a manufacturer of straights, went out of business and Dovo acquired the Bismarck name and now have a Dovo Bismarck razor.

I'm going to give the scales a quick polish on the wheel then re-pin it.

Again, I'm not happy with the pinning. I think for my next project, which will be a full restore including new acrylic scales, I will cut the heads of the brass nails I'm using for pins. I've been lazy and leaving the heads on because they're nicely rounded and smooth, but they are slightly bigger than the peened side.

So I'll cut the heads off so I have a ca. 1/16 (1.5 mm) brass rod.

The overall standard is not that great. There was some wear and scratches that I couldn't get out. I'll be keeping this one for my self. Especially when I don't know why it says C. Lutters and not Salamander Works on the tang.

This may or may not apply this time, but sometimes scales are like the razor boxes, they are from a different razor.

I guess, that razor was manufactured for C. Lutters & Co - knife makers by Salamander. C.L & Co. probably didn't make its own razors but was selling someone's under its own brand. It happened quite often back then (f.e. Chad Clemens) as it is now. It is just my guess.

Well, whatever it is, it can't be sold as a Wedge, so I'll keep it for shaving under my nose :)
