List of the Classic Books

I think we can quibble over books, but it’s harder to quibble over authors and their impact. I don’t think you can take Ulysses off. Contemporary with Virginia Woolf, they experimented with the form and much of what we see today owes its existence to what they did. Same for Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Salinger. We may like some and dislike others, but there’s no denying their effect. I hate Philip Roth’s work with a passion, for example, but he should still be on the list. Cormac McCarthy can’t get away with his long meandering writing style without Faulkner doing it first.

That said, there are authors who, in hindsight, should be on the list. LeGuin and Butler? No question. Towles? Not IMHO. Everett? Maybe, but I haven’t read much of his stuff.
