I've used one. They are quite effective on uncoated carbon-steel blades (which of course is all there was when it was made). However on coated stainless steel blades they seem to make the blade worse probably because they damage the coating.
It's still quite an interesting item - particularly because that example is made of Uranium Glass. It would contain about 1 - 2% uranium which is what gives it its green colour and its residual radioactivity should be detectible using a Geiger counter. However this isn't at a level likely to be a health hazard (though I wouldn’t want to sleep with it under my pillow...). It should glow like crazy under a “black” ultraviolet light (uranium glass looks great under UV – quite spooky actually&#8230

Those were maid for the thicker, carbon blades that could take a bit of sharpening.

As mentioned above though, not such use on coated blades. I think a few guys around here use them as interesting paperweights, too!
