Let's talk about styptic

The alternative to styptic is a good technique. Once you learn how to shave, styptic becomes obsolete.

Well maybe for you. Sometimes even with perfect technique I still get nicks. Doesn't matter if I am using a straight, a DE, or a shavette.

I’m no expert but I think aluminum sulfate is a totally different thing than potassium alum. It stops bleeding much faster and feels different ( although I use it maybe once a year and gave up the alum block completely). I would never run the styptic all over my face.

Indeed that is what I have found - that alum and styptic feel different. Styptic seals faster too.

You should also use it after every shave anyhow,it does wonders.
Doubles as the greatest natural deodorant also.
A 5 EUR Osma block will last you a year.

Funny you say that because my alum block doubles as my deodorant!

I love that half the replies in this thread contain some variation of the formula "I never need styptics because of my awesome, ultra-refined technique" + "but I have this one that I bought during the Truman administration and have never needed."
