What's new

Let's have some fun with scent descriptions

I always get bit of a kick out of the age old question:

"Can someone describe the scent"?

After reading through some of the threads today, I thought it would be interesting to get an idea of what members think of when someone uses a certain word to describe a soap, cream or AS.

I know that the descriptions do not necessarily depict an accurate scent per se, but here's a short list of what I think of when someone uses the following words:

Powdery - What talc smells like after the barber brushes it onto your neck

Floral - The $50 bucks I just spent for a bundle of flowers for my wife. What does that smell like? Like $50 bucks. That or my Grandmother's house...kind of like plants.

Masculine - This word makes me think of the smell of the locker room at the gym, and it ain't so fresh. Which leads me to my next word....

Fresh - Something that has either just comes from the wash machine, has been hanged to dry on the clothesline on a breezy summery day, towels from the dryer (Like dryer sheets).

Clean - The smell of the school hallways after the janitor has mopped them.

Soapy- A good old fashioned bar of hand soap...like ivory.

Woodsy - Cedar chips or the smell of the wooden dock out at the lake.

Citrusy - Anyone remember lemon drop candies?

Rose or Violet - Makes me think of my grade 9 French teacher use to wear so much perfume, I could literally taste it.

Lavender - Makes me think of that putrid smell that comes from the lilac tree in front of my house.

So there you have it. I know better than to think Lavender smells the way I described, and the same goes for Floral. Again, these are just what I think of what I see the descriptions used to describe a scent.

What comes to mind for you?

Regards,

Brad

Powdery - Talc. As a sometime kilt wearer, pretty used to this smell. Specifically Johnson's & Johnson's Baby.

Floral - Walking into a flower shop.

Masculine - Pipe tobacco, wood furniture wax (for some reason), and old books. Oak moss is also in here.

Fresh - Something that has either just comes from the wash machine, has been hanged to dry on the clothesline on a breezy summery day, towels from the dryer (Like dryer sheets).

Clean - This gets me into pine scents or palmolive dish soap.

Soapy- A good old fashioned bar of hand soap...like ivory.

Woodsy - A walk in a spruce forest

Citrusy - Making lime or lemon peels for drinks when I was bar-tending.

Rose or Violet - Grandma used to bathe in rose water. Almost literally.

Lavender - i think, again of Ivory soap, or a lavender mead that was entered in a homebrew competition I was judging. It was alcoholic Ivory...
