Lets do a reverse!

Read loads of posts of the razors people love using be it a gillette, mekur etc but what is the worst de razor you have used?

The Merkur HD is not a bad razor by any means, but of my (limited) selection, it is the least satisfying to use.

The worst?

For me, it's a toss-up. It's either this little contraption that is nearly impossible to hold upside down for under the chin work.

Or the king oscillator, which will not oscillate on anything but a dry face.

I think worst is a little harsh description. I have shaved with about 40 different DE razors. They all have their own character but none were bad. But the least pleasing for me was the Merkur 38C. It's a beautiful, very shiny and impressive piece. I used it just once. The shave was unremarkable and gave a very mild shave. There was nothing really wrong with it but I didn't get the same feeling I get with a vintage 50 or 100 year old razor. I know it's just a state of mind but to me it adds quite a bit to the pleasure of the shave. So the Merkur is just sitting in a box in a bedroom drawer.

What razor is this?

Worst...hmm...I have a love hate relationship with New Improveds, but I don't think I have a worst...

My worst shave experience came from a Gem Micromatic. That tore the crap out of me every time I used it. I tried to give it a chance, thinking it was my technique. I have since given up on it.

Ditto on worst, don't know what that would be? I have vintage Gillettes and a few Gems, and they all shave, and most do it well. No worst yet, just varying degrees of good. The worst of all the really good razors may be my Fatboy. Never did get the hang of it, and it shaves great. So, while worst of what I have, it is a very good shaver.

maybe worst for you but i still really want one
ive been lucky enough to not have any bad experiences with razors that wasnt due to technique.

A Gillette Slim Adjustable with a Wilkinson Blade. That combo is much too lulling.

But why should I get me a razor which has a bad reputation anway?

Therefore I have none.

I'm guessing the "handle' is those two "wings" on the end? Fascinating. Cool collectible, and very portable. I'd hate to be in a situation where that was my only choice though!

You are probably right. I was thinking that those wings just flopped shut as shown in the other pictures, but I guess it depends on which direction you fold them.

Yes, they are the handle, and work surprisingly well wherever you can hold it upright. It's the gripping it upside down part that is a problem.

So when the wings are folded the other way for storage/travel does the thing stay shut or is it all loose and floppy? I guess the little pouch would keep it closed up.

The head isn't held shut by the wings, either open or closed. One wing hinge doubles as a hinge for the head piece, and the other wing hinge doubles as a sort of latch. It snaps over the edge of the bottom plate, and keeps it tight.
The wings are a little stiff to move. I don't know if that's from age, abuse, or by design. At any rate, when folded open, they tend to stay there, and when folded shut they do the same. Also, when folded shut they form a guard making it almost impossible to cut yourself.
