What's new

lets be straight. also, thank you

Badger & Blade you wry enabler, you.

I started snooping on this forum after reading a Basenotes thread. A traditional enthusiast, I quickly switched to wet-shaving and using a DE. Having mastered that, I helped a coworker get into wet-shaving who inherited a gem shaver. Well, he sure took off with that and now almost strictly shaves straight.

In the last 2 weeks I have acquired 4 straights in various conditions, with only one of them almost shave-ready (the rest being in greater states of disrepair.)

My current lineup:
Imp 133 by case
Simmons Keen Cutter
George IXL
Gadman & Sons

Norton im313 I had,
DMT 600/1200 bench en route.
Hopefully a Norton 4k/8k soon.

Once I get all my razors to the 8k finish, I will look in to a 12k waterstone...

I just wanted to say thank you to B&B, all the folks who keep the site up, and the members who put out this information for us young whelps(I'm 29!)

Good luck! Once you get to the point that you start looking at finishing stones, then you'll get good and confused! LOTS of options, natural stones, synthetic stones, lapping films, just sticking with the 8K edge of the Norton. If I were you, I would get some Chromium Oxide and a piece of balsa that's on the order of 3"x12". It will help a lot while you are learning to use the 8K, and can be useful even after a 12K stone. I'm guessing that once you get good with a 8K stone, you won't require the CrOx (but will most likely enjoy the sharper edge it provides). Once you are good on the 12K, you may not desire the CrOx. YMMV. I don't see where you have a strop (maybe that's just implied), but the Poor Man's Strop Kit from Larry at WhippedDog.com has an inexpensive (but good quality) leather strop and a pasted balsa strop.

Gadman & Sons

Possibly Cadman? (T.R. Cadman & Sons, Sheffield)

PS: I agree with the suggestion of getting the most out of your 8k before moving on to a 12k - you can get a surprisingly good edge from an 8k (and can improve it further by doing a final session on lather). And while you're doing that you can be reading all about 12k (or similar) finishing stones to get a feel for what you want - a finishing stone is the one where you'll find the most options and different opinions.

PPS: Welcome to the slippery slope :biggrin1:

Yes it is Cadman. Even looking for it I saw Gadman again; there is a blemish right on the C that makes it look like a G. Once I polish them it will look right.

I decided to get a DMT Diasharp 8k instead of the Norton 4/8 based on some member reviews. They said it will cut quicker than the N4, and give a finer edge than the N8. And I have been looking at Dremels for awhile, and now I have a few projects.

It never ends. Strop, strop/paste or finishing stone, lapping film? B&B strikes again.
