Less Passes Longer lasting edge

I propose that if one limits the number of passes during a shave then the edge will need to be honed/ touched-up less because less damage is being done to the edge. Do you think this logic is true? Why?

I ask because I thought if I give myself the single pass shave like a barber, following their trained pattern and it looks good with no irritation then I'm out the door for my client faster and my razor will thank me because its not being used as much and the edge is being deformed less. In addition, I use less soap because I'm doing only one pass. It's slightly stubbly to touch but doesnt look it at all. Normally I did 3-4 passes every morning, it looked awesome and I was always rushing afterwards. Now the mornings are a breeze and if I need to shave before date night then I'm free to go closer later that evening.

Just a thought and I wanted to see if its the right line of thought.

Logic seems right. I for one enjoy a 3 pass shave though (and honing for that matter).

I think Doc should do this. Thsi way he can reach 300 instead on 100 :)

No way, I am looking forward to this edge dying. There are so many razors to try and so little time to do it.

I can't stand a one pass shave.

Much of the enjoyment I get out of a great shave is the smooth BBS. I don't really care how I look to others, I like the feel of smooth skin on my face and head.

If I feel so much as a patch of stubblies remaining, it makes me grouchy for the rest of the day.

If a barber tried to pass off a one pass shave on me, I'd slap him and leave without paying.

whatever works for your needs. If you don't need BBS daily, then there's no reason to let it effect the rest of your morning.
On occasion I'll do a 3 pass if I want to go all out, most often I do a 2 pass shave, but if I'm in a hurry or just not in the mood I'll do a single pass and still look fine, but doesn't feel as good to me.
I think the most important part though is that you decide how many passes you like, don't let the razors well being decide for you. It's just a tool....and even with weekly touch ups it will likely outlive you :001_tt2:

Maybe. I think that around 70-80% of the wear on the edge would be from the first pass though so I doubt you're saving much.

One theory is that most of the wear on an edge occurs due to oxidation that happens between shaves. So I say shave away!

Of course an edge will last longer if you don't do as many passes. An edge will also last longer if you don't use the razor often.

A car will last longer if you drive 25 miles a day instead of 50. Twenty-five miles a day may not get you where you want to go. Why only drive halfway there?

Likewise, a straight razor shave that isn't BBS doesn't get me where I want to be.

Thanks for the response thus far. I was just trying to rationalize my one pass shave althought my 3-4 pass is my most enjoyable.

I also have to admit that a one pass shave just won't cut it. Yes, I'm nearly stubble free, ,and mostly gone by the second,, but I just can't stop there either. It's BBs or why bother. I can't justify saving a bit of edge in lieu of a bad shave.

+1

I can get a few months without honing, with just touch-up on crox. I like a smooth face and I don't mind the extra soap.
