les24preludes's Entry to the Hall of Fame

You obviously have other talents, as well, making your fat handles with a vise and a drill press. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments.

Thanks for that! The other thing I've done is write 5 books on the psychology of the arts and media - my speciality. This led to quite a few TV appearances, since one of the books was about Fame, and that was quite buzzy in the 1990s. It was quite a fun time and I met a lot of interesting people. I made the decision in the 1980s to specialise in performers and creatives and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

@les24preludes, what’s your instrument (or instruments)? What kind of stuff do you prefer to play?

I'm mostly a double bass player, but I play fairly good keyboards too and do some songwriting. I played bebop for many years, though I'm classically trained. I like working with singers especially songwriters. Here's a very early video of me having a masterclass with Ray Brown. From 16.00

What kind of bass were you playing on in the video? Did you study French or German bow?

French bow. It was a nice Jaquet which I sold and regretted selling. I replaced it with a 1946 Rubner which I still have.
Did you do any orchestral playing in the UK since you’re classically trained?
I’m not familiar with any of the bow makers you mentioned. I have a Bryant myself which I used sparingly because it’s light but it is a beautifully made stick with his trademark frog. Also a Reid Hudson contemporary Canadian and a DeLuccia who made a lot of bows for string players in the Philadelphia Orchestra but he’s long gone. The price of good bows is climbing as fast as good basses. I heard Robertson’s shop in Albuquerque is trying to get $50K for a Sartory bow. That’s wack man!

I don't do any orchestral playing - gave that up about 2 years after leaving the RAM. I meant the bass on the video was a Jaquet, which I replaced with the 1946 Rubner bass. I've no idea what my bow is - have a French and a German and both in need of a re-hair. I don't really play the double bass these days. I use a bass guitar on gigs.

Cool stuff, Andy. The double bass is an awesome instrument.
