I have had a good many smoked beers before. They are made with rauch malt (rauch is german for smoke). Rauch malt is a light pilsner malt that is smoked at the time of drying the malt. It looks like in this beer they smoke some chocolate malt at the brewery too. I'm sure this beer is great. Smoked porters are always awesome.
Not entirely related, but Left Hand's nitro Milk Stout is, without question, my favorite beer of all time. It's my desert island beer, my death bed beer, my celebration beer. Those dudes can brew, so I'd be all for trying another sampling of their wares.
I don't know that I've had that particular beer before, but I've had one like it. Mine was a Lapsang Souchong flavored beer. It tasted nothing like a smoked porter usually does, it was a bit "bacony" and while the first few sips were very good the flavor got worse as it warmed up and I couldn't get through more than half the pint. It threw my taste off the rest of the night, and I couldn't stomach bacon for a few weeks. Not a fan.
I tried it around a year ago and IIRC, my immediate description was, "It tastes like a bonfire!" Good beer underneath it, but the smoke overwhelms any other flavors. I'd drink it again, but I'd make sure I had others around so I wouldn't have to finish the bottle myself.
Oh man, I need to find this. I have a few Fade to Black vol 2 at home (Smoked Baltic Porter) and that's phenomenal. I can only imagine what this is like.
