Leather vests

Anyone wear one? Brown conjures up rodeo images, and black...bikers. I'm looking at this one but it might feel a little out of place in the Big Apple:

Dang - that might be very tough to pull off.

Orvis makes some really great stuff and that leather looks nice, but I just can't think of a combination of shirt/pants that would help you avoid the associations you mentioned.

I was going to wear it with jeans and a denim shirt but...

Maybe if I owned Microsoft or worked on a ranch.

I could see that vest working with a cream shirt, brown tweed jacket, nice gold pocket watch, needlecords and dark brown suede shoes. Perfect for fall. One nice thing about vests is that they work well with a pocket watch in one side and a smartphone in the other. Just buy a few shares of Microsoft, then you can legitimately claim to own it.

I think I'll go and dig out my suede vest right now!

Ooooo :bored: leather waistcoats ... Tricky.
As mentioned it's very very hard not to look like a biker or a pirate or like you should be wearing a ten gallon hat.
Honestly as a woman I think if you're not going for any of the above looks, and you are straight, then opt for one in a different material.
Waistcoats CAN look very smart esp with a subtle pocket watch chain or with the right shirt paired with them. In general though I've yet to see a man that looks good in one casually with jeans.
Think more Mad Men or Robert Downey Jnr in Sherlock Holmes and then your talkin'!

Arrggg matey :pirate:

Hey if you want to wear a leather vest go for it! Most folks in the big apple probably won't even notice because they are so busy with them self.

I have a vest made from buffalo that I bought at Billy Martins in New York of all places. It is a very unique piece that is a conversation piece wherever I go. Cannot imagine not having it for fall wear. Have always wanted to get one of those Clint Eastwood looking vest from The Good, The Bad, The Ugly but never got around to it. Check out Billy Martins. Interesting store.

Ooh, tough call. That's one of those pieces you can get away with in NYC only with a massive dose of style and self-confidence. If you have to ask if it works.... you're not ready to wear it yet!

Yeah, that doesn't say "biker" it says "I know I'm in a Men's room stall in Studio 54 with Halston, but Freddie Mercury is still standing WAY too close to me."
